Anastasia (1956 film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Anastasia is a 1956 film which tells the story of a young, confused woman in France after the Russian Revolution of 1917 who, backed by the Russian emigre community, attempts to pass herself off as Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia, the daughter of the murdered Tsar Nicholas II of Russia.
Anastasia won her Academy Award for Best Actress; it was nominated for Academy Award for Original Music Score.
The subject of Anastasia was recast in 1997 as an animated musical feature by Fox Animation Studios, one that lost even the Bergman version's tenuous connection to the story of the real-life Anna Anderson.

 Anastasia - Movie Review
Bounin is seeking a woman to impersonate Grand Duchess Anastasia, the daughter of the murdered Tsar of Russia who has long been rumoured to have survived the revolution, in order to claim a substantial inheritance.
'Anastasia' is a romantic fantasy rather than an accurate historical piece, and on that level it is spectacular.
DVD Extras: In the UK, 'Anastasia' is available on a stand-alone budget DVD or as part of a two-disc set with another Ingrid Bergman film 'The Inn of the Sixth Happiness'.

 Anastasia (1956) - Movie Review
This is the earlier, and definitely not animated, version of the story of the hunt for Anastasia Romanov, daughter of the Tsar who, according to legend, was the only member of the royal family to survive their massacre by revolutionaries in 1917.
Anastasia starts off in the late 1920s among the exiled White Russian community in Paris, who rather obsessively keep their country’s customs alive in a foreign place.
Certain entrepreneurs in the community, including a disgraced former general, Prince Bounine (Yul Brynner), have been trying for years to discover a trainable woman with a close-enough resemblance to Anastasia that she could pass for the real thing – and collect 10 million pounds of Russian royal money sitting in a London bank.

dOc DVD Review: Anastasia: Fox Studio Classics (1956)
Although the Romanov family was believed to have been killed by the Bolsheviks, there were persistent rumors that Anastasia had escaped the executioners and had been seen in a variety of places.
Using Anna's resemblance and the fact that while in a mental asylum she claimed to be Anastasia, Bounine, Chernov (Akim Tamaroff) and Petrovin (Sacha Pitoeff) work to remake the suicidal and confused Anna into the Grand Duchess Anastasia, drilling her on court conduct and facts about the royal household.
Most interesting is the A&E Biography episode devoted to Anastasia; most of the first half is devoted to the real (brief) life of the Grand Duchess, while the balance is devoted to Anna Anderson and her claims.

The most touching scenes were how Anastasia responded to the successive examinations of board members, followed by of Russian aristocrats and finally by the Emperess, her grand ma ma (Helen Hayes).

Ingrid Bergman gives one of her memorable, haunting, and haunted performances as an amnesiac chosen by a White Russian general (Yul Brynner) in 1928 to play the part of Anastasia, the long-rumored but missing survivor of the Bolsheviks' murderous attack on the czar's family.
A critical scene: When Anastasia appeals to her grandmother to open her eyes to the truth, the words seem artificial.
And even after Anastasia's acceptance by her grandmother, the ending seems artificial and rushed, as if the director ran out of patience and yelled 'cut' prematurely.
