As a fairy-tale style adaptation of the legend of the Russian grand duchess Anastasia, the film imagines that Anastasia, daughter of Nicholas II of Russia, escapes the Imperial Palace during the October Revolution and survives the slaughter of the Imperial family.
The film is based on the play from the 1950s by Marcelle Maurette adapted by Guy Bolton and turned into the film Anastasia (1956) which was based on the legend of Grand Duchess Anastasia of Russia surfacing as "Anna Anderson".

Although 1997 was a meek year for animated feature films, it did represent the coming of a new revolution for animation.
DreamWorks marketed their film as an adult feature that would be suitable for children as well, but even with the help of leading voice actor, Woody Allen, Antz lacked the magical spark that cartoons typically bring, and instead left a dark and claustrophobic impression.
This film is a visually captivating tale set amidst 16th century Mayan culture about a couple of roguish swindlers who get their hands on a map to the fabled city of gold, El Dorado.

The film also does go the route of most animated films in adding little sidekicks, but thankfully, this film has some of the best in quite some time.
I remember the early screening I saw of this film in 1997, where a majority of the kids really enjoyed the film, but it freaked out some of the smaller kids who were scared off by the film's action.

Emerson College dropout Paul Thomas Anderson's sophomore sizzler (his first film was last winter's little noir Hard Eight), a grand, comic epic about the porn-film industry of the late '70s and early '80s, one-ups Scorsese, Altman, and Tarantino.
Anastasia, from Disney alum Don Bluth, is animation that looks more like a live-action movie, but its tale of how Tsar Nicholas II's youngest daughter finds her grandmama -- and love -- in Paris, despite the efforts of the villainous Rasputin, is Anastasia's story as it never was but should have been.
With Elisabeth Matheson magnificent in the title role, the film is like an Icelandic saga: love and marriage, family and society, sin and redemption -- what life is all about.

The love story between the title character and Dmitri (a con-man who unknowingly trains Anastasia to pretend to be Anastasia) is so effective, in fact, that the evil schemes of Rasputin (now half-dead) and his droll bat sidekick Bartok (hilariously voiced by Hank Azaria) almost seem tacked on.
In spite of its generic underpinnings, however, The Rainmaker is a fine film: The pacing's smooth, the cinematography and Memphis locations lovely, and the performances kick butt.

Indeed the film rather amazingly comes out to state that the entire Revolution was not a people's uprising against a cruel and incompetent aristocracy but rather was all down to the fl-hearted Rasputin selling his soul in revenge for being banned from the Tsar's court.
