  ANATASE (Titanium Oxide)
Anatase shares many of the same or nearly the same properties as rutile such as luster, hardness and density.
Anatase and rutile have the same symmetry, tetragonal 4/m 2/m 2/m, despite having different structures.
Nice specimens of anatase are associated with quartz and are considered classics in the mineral world.

  Anatase - LoveToKnow 1911
When strongly heated, anatase is converted into rutile, changing in specific gravity to 4.1; naturally occurring pseudomorphs of rutile after anatase are also known.
Crystals of anatase have been artificially prepared by several methods; for instance, by the interaction of steam and titanium chloride or fluoride.
Another name commonly in use for this mineral is octahedrite, a name which, indeed, is earlier than anatase, and given because of the common (acute) octahedral habit of the crystals.

Description: Anatase is a relatively rare mineral found in veins and cavities in schists, gneisses, granites, syenites and other related igneous rocks.
Tyler (1940) notes anatase as a heavy mineral in "Huronian" meta-sediments as tiny yellow, light blue, colorless or yellowish euhedral grains and as tiny yellow euhedral grains in Keweenawan sediments.
Reported as occurring with brookite in a quarry on Mosinee Hill.

Anatase is virtually unique within the mineral kingdom, occurring as one of a group of three polymorphs, each of which is found in worthwhile specimens at numerous localities.
True, anatase crystals are never particularly large, but their commonly perfect development and aesthetic arrangement in a variety of associations make this mineral one of the species actively sought by collectors.
Anatase is brittle and exhibits perfect cleavage on {001} and {011} and has a Mohs hardness of 5.5-6.0 and a density of 3.89.

  Kids.Net.Au - Encyclopedia > Anatase
Anatase is one of the three mineral forms of titanium dioxide.
The common pyramid of anatase, parallel to the faces of which there are perfect cleavages, has an angle over the polar edge of 82°9', the corresponding angle of rutile being 56°52½'.
There are also important differences between the physical characters of anatase and rutile; the former is not quite so hard (H=5½-6) or dense (specific gravity 3.9); it is optically negative, rutile being positive; and its lustre is even more strongly adamantine or metallic-adamantine than that of rutile.

Anatase shares many of the same or nearly the same properties as rutile such as luster, hardness and density, but due to structural differences, anatase and rutile differ slightly in crystal habit and more distinctly in cleavage.

 Hombitan anatase microcrystals
The anatase microcrystals used in the spun-fiber field are also additionally required to exert a positive effect on filter service-lives, gelling and the incidence of fiber breakage.
Hombitan anatase microcrystals match this requirement profile with their extremely good dispersibility and uniform distribution in the most diverse types of polymers.
This anatase microcrystal, based on Hombitan LW-S-U, achieves extraordinarily good dispersibility with low shearing forces and a drastically reduced reagglomeration tendency during polymerization, thanks to the additional integration of an organic coating.

Analyzing the Vinland Map : Full-text article: Olin, 2003
The identification of titanium in the form of anatase titanium dioxide in the ink of the map caused McCrone to claim that the map was a forgery.
The concentration of anatase in the map’s ink has been one of the controversial points but has been demonstrated to be the result of the fact that the samples analyzed differ from each other by a factor of 1000.
The explanation for the presence of anatase in the ink of the Vinland Map is either that it was added by a forger in the twentieth century or it is present in the ink because of the materials used to make the ink.

Although the difference in refractive index gives rutile pigments up to 15% opacity benefit over anatase pigments, the bluer tone and lower hardness of anatase pigments are beneficial in some applications, especially where low abrasivity may be an issue.
Thus anatase pigments were originally the preferred choice for paper filling and coating and also for delustering of synthetic fibers, where the color of the application may degraded by abrasion of metal during frequent rubbing contact with machinery during processing.

Anatase and rutile forms of titanium dioxide demonstrated similar solubility in these tests.

We measured the titanium content of nanogram flakes of the yellow ink itself, no parchment, and found 5-45% by weight of the inorganic content to be titanium.
Interviewed at the Symposium Wilcomb Washburn of the Smithsonian said "I think the evidence is clearly on the side of authenticity." On CBS that night, he said the inks in the "Tartar Relation" and the Speculum Historiale thought to have been bound with the VM also showed anatase.
No one has found anatase in these two documents and we found 200 times less titanium (in any form) in those inks than we found in the VM.
