  Notes on the Nembutsu
Many people who encounter the Dharma for the first time are intrigued by this focus and, of course, we have already seen that it is one of the 'three signata' (tri-lakshana) which must be present in any presentation of the Dharma as a mark of orthodoxy.
Anatman in fact attests to the complex structure of human personality; the fact that it lacks any single enduring, individual substance.
It is very important, in my view, to keep in mind that the Buddha Dharma, in its Anatman emphasis, does not deprecate the reality of human personality, neither does it posit its destruction or lack of individuality or uniqueness.

The terms Atman and anAtman are understood in various senses.
anAtman stands for the inanimate objects like stone, paper, etc. In these senses, there is not complete opposition between Atman and anAtman because the bodily limbs etc which ought to come under anAtman form a part of Atman.
This meaning is not peculiar to the opposition between Atman and anAtman.

The principle of Anatman suggests that their is likely no such thing as an eternal soul.
The Hindu equivalent of anatman, the atman, is most well translated as "soul"- that part of a being that is completely seperated from the qualities of the being's current life (or genma) and is part of or equivalent to (in some sense) the universal divinity, Brahman.
Anatman is actually based upon the Hindu principle of atman.

Thus he taught the doctrine of anatman, or the denial of a permanent soul.
To the Buddha, all existence was characterized by “the three universal truths”: impermanence (anitya), suffering (dukkha), and non-substantiality or no-soul (anatman).
The doctrine of anatman made it necessary for the Buddha to reinterpret the Indian idea of repeated rebirth in the cycle of phenomenal existence known as samsara.

Used of the cosmos it signifies, in contrast to atman which is absolute spirit, its shadow or non-spirit, the corporeal or vehicular side of the universe, often mystically spoken of as the cosmic shadow.

Anatman is relevant to Buddhist practice, Atman is relevant to Hindu belief.
Anatman is not some thing that can be pointed at, it is the process of refutation of atman and proceeding from there, without any notion of self in the first place, not for the individual and certainly not for the universe.
No, it doesn't work that way, anatman isn't a concept of that kind, it is one of a process of proceeding without a notion of self in the development of sila, samadhi and panna.

This is why we have to hold that Atman is superposed on anAtman and the latter on the former (itarEtara-adhyAsa).
In place of the superposition of Atman and anAtman, each on the other, we cannot hold that identity (Ekatva) is superposed on these entities just as it is done on two distant trees.
Therefore we have to understand the superposition in the sense that identity of Atman is superposed on anAtman and vice versa.

The `No-Self' Nature of People and Things by Charlie Singer
This idea of anatman, or `no-self', was taught by the historical Buddha, Buddha Sakyamuni, as being one of the "three marks of existence", along with duhkha, or dissatisfaction, and anitya, or impermanence.
Common to all schools or forms of Buddhism, is the idea of anatman or `no-self' nature of the individual or person (or actually of all beings endowed with consciousness).
Yet there is a sense in which in the traditional parlance of the nature of anatman, or `no-self', as referring to the same truth of `things' and sensations as being "shunya" or "empty".

One may say, Atman denoted by "I" (asmat) and anAtman by "non-I" or "you" these two are of opposite characters just as light and darkness are.
Atman is chit and anAtman is given by chit.
So the main argument against superposition is this: Atman and anAtman can not be superposed on each other, because one can not be the other; for example, of the two entities light and darkness, one can not be the other and therefore one can not be superposed on the other.

Some Buddhist thought tries to interpret the doctrine of anatman as meaning that there is a true Self, and that all that is being denied is the limited self or ego.
Insofar as Dooyeweerd emphasizes totality, root unity, and selfhood, his philosophy can be more easily compared with an emphasis on atman rather than the doctrine of anatman, which leads to a fragmented and de-centered view of the self.

The Doctrine of Svabhava or Svabhavata and the Questions of Anatman and Shunyata by David Reigle
All known schools of Buddhism have always taught that all dharmas are anatman or "without self." This means that atman as the universal higher self taught in Hinduism and also taught in Theosophy is denied.
If, on the other hand, the Buddha's point with the anatman doctrine was not to refute an absolute consciousness, but to refute an absolute substratum of any kind, the Buddhists have some very embarrassing sutras of their own to reconcile.
The doctrine of shunyata, the central teaching of the Prajna-paramita texts, is stated in terms of the shunyata, the "emptiness" or "voidness" of all dharmas; or more fully, that all dharmas are svabhava-shunya, "empty" (shunya) of svabhava.

Indeed the key elements of the structure of the Buddhist scheme of salvation is built upon generosity, including, for example, the transfer of merits (eko), the bodhisattva ideal, the lay path, the 48 vows of Amida Buddha, the Madhyamika philosophy that is based on emptiness, and the Flower Ornament Sutra.
Generosity in all its forms is the most significant practical expression of the truth of anatman.
Ignorance is such an integral part of our organism that the Buddha Dharma since its inception has been aware that some kind of external wedge often needs to be used so as to prise open the first cracks in the walls of illusion upon which our existence is built.
