Anatole Litvak (May 10, 1902 December 15, 1974) was a Ukrainian-born international filmmaker who wrote, directed, and produced films in a variety of countries and languages.
Because of Litvak's ability to speak the Russian, German and French languages, he played a key role as the head of the army's photography division responsible for documenting the U.S. D Day landing on Normandy.
Anatole Litvak died in 1974 in the Parisian suburb of Neuilly-sur-Seine, France.

In Anatole Litvak's Goodbye Again, Paula (the intoxicating Ingrid Bergman), a successful, middle-aged interior decorator, has been trapped in a dead-end relationship with Roger (Yves Montand), a philandering, transportation businessman.
Commissioned to redecorate the Paris apartment of a wealthy American widow, she meets the pensive and melancholy Philip (Anthony Perkins), the widow's aimless son, who is immediately attracted to her.

 The Snake Pit
After watching Anatole Litvak's "Snake Pit" on video and doing some research, I realize now that I couldn't have been more unfair to the professionals who worked on this groundbreaking 1948 film.
Anatole Litvak, whom Paul Buhle describes as an "independent-minded leftish émigré" in his recently published (with Dave Wagner) "Radical Hollywood", worked as a teenager in the avant-garde Soviet theater in Petrograd.
Litvak and Wexley joint projects included the 1938 "City For Conquest," starring James Cagney as a boxer blinded by acid in the ring seeking revenge and the 1939 "Confessions of a Nazi Spy" that exposed the German-American bund.

When the Nazis came to power, Litvak, a Jew, was forced to emigrate to Paris where he directed four more films, including Mayerling (1936).
In 1937, he signed with RKO and a year later with Warner Bros., where he directed his next nine films, including the early anti-Nazi film Confessions of a Nazi Spy (1939).
The Snake Pit (1948) brought him another Academy nomination, this time for best directing; the thriller Decision Before Dawn (1951), starring a young Oskar Werner as a double agent spying on the Nazis for the United States, is notable for its use of German locations.

Litvak brilliantly depicts the asylum as a microcosm of society, with hierarchies and etiquette ruling each numbered ward.
Often resembling a prison, the stark hospital is governed by a dictatorial staff intoxicated by its autonomy, and unwilling to relax the carefully crafted atmosphere of uncertainty and fear.
