Topic: Anaxander

Goddess of Yesterday (Bank Street College of Education Josette Frank Award) | Caroline B. Cooney...
The dramatic and bloody siege of Troy is one of the oldest and best of human stories, and in Goddess of Yesterday Caroline Cooney tells it afresh through the eyes of Anaxander, the daughter of the king of a tiny Greek island.
As a child she is taken as a hostage to the island of King Nicander.
Anaxander frightens them off by pretending to be the goddess Medusa, with the help of an octopus as a hairdo.

Battle Rep   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The battlefield that the Khan stumbled on was deemed suitable for action, and the Khan sent the Alans on a wide sweep to the left of where the Byzantines were thought to be.
Captured natives had indicated the presence of a long hill, and a village, so the Khan sent the redoubtable Anaxander to seize this village, and sweep around it, while himself leading his forces to confront the Byzantines directly, hopefully enticing their horse away from their foot by his apparent weakness.
Eventually, Anaxander detached himself from the combat briefly, and ordered a portion of the tribesmen out of the village, to support his lancers.

Gr 5-8-Six-year-old, Anaxander is taken by King Nicander to his small Greek island kingdom to be a companion to his crippled daughter, Callisto, in this novel by Caroline B. Cooney (Delacorte 2002).
She is rescued by King Menelaus of Sparta (husband of half-goddess Helen and father to Hermione and Pleisthenes) who believes that she is Princess Callisto, an identity she assumes in order to avoid becoming a slave.
Christina Moore's narration believably takes Anaxander from the role of young and innocent child to that of a mature woman fighting for her life in an environment thick with suspicion, intrigue, and revenge.

 Thucydides-Passages
Now certain of the chief citizens of Methymna who had been driven into exile had conveyed to the island about fifty hoplites, partisans of theirs, from Cymè, besides others whom they hired on the mainland, to the number of three hundred in all.
They were commanded by Anaxander, a Theban, who was chosen leader because the Lesbians were of Theban descent.
In this attempt they were foiled by the timely arrival of the Athenian garrison from Mytilenè, and being a second time repulsed outside the walls, had marched over the mountains and induced Eresus to revolt.

The Lacedaemonians were making war against the Messenians, who had revolted, and their king Anaxander, having invaded Messenia, took as prisoners certain women, and among them Kleo, priestess of Thetis.
This Kleo the wife of Anaxander asked for from her husband, and discovering that she had the wooden image of Thetis, she set up with her a temple for the goddess.
This Leandris did because of a vision in a dream, (5) but the wooden image of Thetis is guarded in secret.

In his guide to Greece, Pausanias relates the story about the foundation of the sanctuary of Thetis in Laconia.
During the Second Messenian War, the Spartan King Anaxander invaded Messenia and took several persons prisoner, including Cleo, the priestess of Thetis.

The Chronology Of Ancient Kingdoms Amended.
And the five Kings of the Race of Eurysthenes, between the end of the first Messenian war, and the beginning of the Reign of Darius Hystaspis; Eurycrates, Anaxander, Eurycrates II, Leon, Anaxandrides, Reigned 202 years, which is above 40 years a-piece.
Thus the Greek Chronologers, who follow Timæus and Eratosthenes, have made the Kings of their several Cities, who lived before the times of the Persian Empire, to Reign about 35 or 40 years a-piece, one with another; which is a length so much beyond the course of nature, as is not to be credited.
these Kings, Eurycrates, Anaxander, Eurycratides, Leon, Anaxandrides, Clomenes, Leonidas, andc.
