The Rhetorica ad Alexandrum, usually included among the works of Aristotle, is now generally admitted to be by Anaximenes, although some consider it a much later production (edition by Spengel, 1847).
ANAXIMENES, of Miletus, Greek philosopher in the latter half of the 6th century, was probably a younger contemporary of Anaximander, whose pupil or friend he is said to have been.
He held that the air, with its variety of contents, its universal presence, its vague associations in popular fancy with the phenomena of life and growth, is the source of all that exists.

Anaximenes, in other words, held that "air" was the principle of all living things, and that it was constantly and eternally in motion.
While in this theory Anaximenes was close to the thinking of Anaximander, he differed from him with regard to the shape of the earth, for Anaximander, like Thales, conceived of the earth - and all the other celestial bodies - as a gigantic disc.
Anaximenes was the first to realise that the moon took its light from the sun, and thus was able to explain the eclipses of the sun and the moon.

BY DIOGENES LAERTIUS, TRANSLATED BY C.D. ANAXIMENES, the son of Eurystratus, a Milesian, was a pupil of Anaximander; but some say that he was also a pupil of Parmenides.
There were also two other persons of the name of Anaximenes, both citizens of Lampsacus; one an orator and the other a historian, who was the son of the sister of the orator, and who wrote an account of the exploits of Alexander.
How then can Anaximenes apply his mind to the contemplation of the skies, while he is in perpetual fear of death or slavery?

Kraus argues that the rhetorical proof of ethos, or the character of the speaker, was first written about by the ancient Greeks, and was subsequently altered and diminished in character by Aristotle and Quintilian.
The earliest writings on the rhetorical proof of ethos appear in the works of Anaximenes of Lampsacus and Isocrates.
The ancient Greek rhetoricians felt that ethos is an effective method of persuasion, as the speaker’s character lends authority to an argument.

Aristotle, whose own Rhetoric is in some ways the most important (if not the most widely influential) rhetorical treatise ever penned, produced for the edification of his own students a Sunagôgê Tekhnôn, or 'compendium of handbooks,' in which he summarized the tekhnai of his predecessors -- so successfully, it seems, that it effectively supplanted them.
An author writing at about the same time as Aristotle (we generally finger Anaximenes of Lampsacus) produced the Rhetorica ad Alexandrum, which evinces some superficial resemblance to Aristotle's own work.
As captured Greece begins to take her Roman captor captive, the spread of formalized oratory, and of rhetorical precept, is pervasive throughout the Mediterranean world.
