Ancaster was incorporated as a town in 1974, but in 2001 it was merged into the new city ofHAMILTON.
Ancaster was named in 1793 by Augustus Jones, the surveyor of the township, after the parish of Ancaster in Lincolnshire, England.
In 1832 the opening of the Desjardins Canal in DUNDAS, Ancaster's neighbour and rival, was a blow to Ancaster.

The Ancaster Cardinals defeatedĀ OakvilleĀ (12 year olds) 8-2 in the final of the Dundas Major Little League Tournament on Sunday, September 18th.
Ancaster went undefeated in the tourney defeating Oakville (12 year olds) 2-1, East Nepean 4-2, Oakville (11 year olds) 14-4, and Dundas 9-2.
Ancaster Little League is the central organization providing baseball and softball in this community.

Ancaster is the source of Ancaster stone, a mid-Jurassic oolitic limestone, worked by the Romans and used for many great buildings such as Lincoln Cathedral.

A geological analysis of the sculptures found in other areas would throw more light on this theory and the general exchange of goods in Roman times.
