Steam beer may be defined as a highly effervescent beer made by brewing lager yeasts at ale fermentation temperatures.
Modern steam beer, properly known in the brewing community as California Common beer, was originated by Anchor Brewing Company, which trademarked the name Anchor SteamĀ® Beer in 1981.

Fritz Maytag, the owner of the Anchor Steam brewery in Potrero Hill, has begun a PR blitz to lobby City Hall to put into effect zoning laws that protecting industrial businesses in San Francisco.
Maytag is threatening to close the Anchor Steam brewery, saying that if new zoning laws go into effect, he and his business will be priced out of Potrero in favor of a residential construction project slated to build 41 units on 17th and Mariposa.
Anchor Steam believes it can't compete to buy property against residential interests without some sort of protection for industrial business and that the overemphasis on residential property is destroying our town.

Anchor is one of the oldest independent breweries in the country and is a San Francisco institution.
Anchor is also one of the breweries that helped kick-off the microbrew revolution which has led to a much wider variety of good beers that are available around the country.
After the tour we got to taste their 6 main beers: Anchor Steam, Liberty Ale, Anchor Porter, Summer Beer, Old Foghorn (their Barleywine Style Ale) and of course this time of year they also brew their special Christmas Ale, which is one of my favorites.

After their near demise, the Boulder Brewery seems to have found a second life as a contract brewery in addition to producing their own products.
I'm not sure at what point in production a large brewery like Coors would pasteurize their beer but homebrewers who are interested in trying it (god knows why) can do it after bottling.
On tap, they serve their Wheat beer, the regular Steam, Liberty Ale(one of my favorites), the Porter and a Barley wine that's about 7% and is known as Foghorn Lager.

The Anchor tour is a good one but you must call in advance (Anchor Brewing Company tour info).
The tour at Anchor Brewery is a blast, but be sure to reserve well in advance, as it fills up quickly.
Their Anchor Steam is a classic, and I'm fond of the Porter as well.
