Windlass installations on Gemini Catamarans   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Because of the limited space beneath the windlass it is necessary to help the chain down to the bottom of the locker once or twice as it comes in.
This works well for dropping the anchor but when raising the anchor single handed you are still going to have to go to the foredeck once or twice each time to clear the rode and chain from below the windlass as explained above.
When anchored, put the anchor rode on a cleat so that the windlass is not taking the load of the anchored boat.

The regenerative braking affect is limited to the DC motor’s safe maximum continuous armature current, the commutation limits of the DC motor and the safe maximum field current applicable to the DC motor.

 BoatUS BoatTECH Guides: Anchor Windlasses
Lever-type windlasses are generally single speed, and vertical models, like sheet winches, have two speeds: a fast, low-power gear for light loads, and a slower speed with higher power for when the going gets tougher.
Windlasses weigh a lot and handle high loads; you may need to reinforce your deck and spread the load with marine plywood or an aluminum or stainless plate.
Although your windlass is rated at three times the weight of your anchor and chain, the slop factor takes into account strong wind, current, and recalcitrant anchors firmly dug in.

Windlass information for sailing yachts and boats or boat-for-sale
For myself the anchor windlass has a level of importance way up there with the sails, rig and engine and it's right up there now on my list of things that must be good on the prospective new boat-for-sale listings.
With the combination of high current loads and cable length it is subject to voltage drop problems, and anchor windlass performance and therefore lifting capability is reduced by the installation of incorrectly sized and rated cables.
Windlasses do not have a constant load during anchor recovery, but have a varying load according to the various phases of anchor recovery.

 Anchor windlass - Patent 4274620
An anchor windlass has a shaft on which an anchor-line sprocket is freely rotatable between an abutment fixed axially on the shaft and an entrainment emenet fixed rotationally but axially shiftable on this shaft.
An anchor windlass typically has a wheel either constituted as a capstan, sprocket, drum, or barrel that can be rotated at low speed with high torque to haul in an anchor.
Thus with the system according to the instant invention to haul anchor the motor or crank which rotates the shaft is operated in one direction while the pawl is engaged in the notch of the nut to screw it forwardly and clamp the wheel tightly on the shaft.

The power used by the electric anchor windlass is not a real problem; modern boats have proper batteries and the electric anchor windlass runs for few minutes only.
The main advantage of this type of anchor windlass is that the profile deck is very compact as the electric motor and the gearbox are under the deck.
Most of our anchor windlasses are available in two different electric motors, a powerful electric motor which is faster and has more pulling power, and a smaller one with a lower current draw so it is possible to use smaller cross section electric cables.

 Winch Selection Guide
Estimating or measuring the depth of fall of the rode into the anchor locker may dictate which type of windlass is most suitable for your vessel.
Accessories such as chain stoppers or chain snubbers are highly recommended for safe anchoring, the avoidance of unintentional self-launching of the anchor and for the prevention of damage to your anchor winch.
The anchor winch is designed to pull up a dead weight and should not be subjected to the strain of your boat riding at anchor.

SC MARINE | Repairs | Installations | Anchor Windlasses
Installing an anchor windlass can be the best solution to the tiresome chore of manually hauling in your anchor.  Whether you install a manual or motor-driven system, a windlass will make retrieving your anchor simple and worry-free.
Figure four times the unloaded weight if you favour anchoring in rocky waterways or often encounter adverse conditions.   Today there is a choice of windlass for every anchor and rode type.  Your first decision is whether to install a manual or a motor-driven system.
Lever-type windlass systems are usually single speed, while vertical models, like sheet winches, have two speeds: fast, low-power gear for light loads, and a slower speed with higher power for the heavier, harder to handle loads.

"The concept of this windlass grew out of an injury (albeit one we felt was mostly operator error), so we felt developing a fully enclosed, automatic rope/chain windlass design was important in the smaller vessel range where boaters are less knowledgeable about operation procedures," said Mike Dillon, president of North American operations.
