Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
"Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy" takes us back to those halcyon days of the 1970's, when the hair was as big as the lapels and women were just beginning to assume their rightful place in America's television newsrooms.
"Anchorman" is a light-hearted, enjoyable little comedy that, unlike a full-throated satire (say, like "Network"), often goes for the easy laugh instead of the incisive barb.
Like most mainstream comedies, the humor in "Anchorman" ranges from the mildly funny to the downright hilarious, the latter including a clever "West Side Story" parody involving a rumble between rival news teams, and a conversation between a dog and a bear that ends the movie on a ludicrous but knee-slapping high note.

Most of the scenes appearing in the Anchorman trailer didn't even make the final cut, including one in which Burgundy takes a bullet for rival co-anchor Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate, possessing, as she explains, "exquisite breasts"), which would have been a major plot point in any other movie but was expendable in this case.
She will ultimately be the cause of his undoing, which involves his growing a beard and drinking milk from the carton on a hot day, and his redemption, if such a thing is possible for a man who believes he's actually having conversations with his dog.
Anchorman is stupid, sure, but never dumb, which is news indeed at a time when people think the rancid White Chicks is funny.

 Review: Anchorman
With Anchorman, Ferrell has landed on the middle ground of PG-13 and delivered the funniest comedy of the year.
Surprising as it is to say, Anchorman is a period-piece which takes us back to the 1970’s when the local news teams were celebrated and admired.
Anchorman succeeds because it is the opposite of what I have come to except from big-budget comedies: Anchorman actually gets funnier as the movie goes on.

 Anchorman (2004): Reviews
It's hard to say whether Anchorman is the funniest movie of the year - it has enough offbeat and gut-busting moments to make it worth consideration in that category.
Anchorman is the kind of wonderful, cotton-candy escapism that should leave you with the right kind of stomachache.
Anchorman has one amusing character, a dumb weatherman played by Steve Carell, and a nicely observed set piece about what newscasters really say to one another when they're shuffling papers between segments.

In case you're just joining us, their comments — like most of the lines in the film — are made with tongue firmly in cheek.
And Anchorman, which he co-wrote with director Adam McKay, has vintage Ferrell absurdities: a mentally disabled weatherman who refers to Iowa as the "middle east," a gang brawl between rival news teams and a terrier that gets drop-kicked over a freeway overpass — and still gets the last laugh.

Anchorman is a very funny motion picture, but it also has a good sense of the time (the 1970s) and how the medium of TV news was changing.
Anchorman is more over-the-top and intentionally silly than either of the aforementioned movies, but it still makes the point.

"Anchorman" chronicles the upheaval that rocks the fictional KVWN-TV when news director Ed Harken (Fred Willard) announces that, in the name of diversity and a changing outlook in society, he has hired a female reporter, Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate).
Fortunately, the men who made "Anchorman" -- Ferrell and his co-writer and director, Adam McKay -- are smarter than Ron Burgundy and his band of male chauvinist pigs.
If "Anchorman" weren't so silly, it would probably be obnoxiously overbearing -- kind of like the KVWN news team.

Anchorman comes on as a satire of this kind of '70s local celebrity—who loomed even larger back then, a prologue reminds us, when we were stuck with maybe three local stations and PBS.
No, Anchorman doesn't have that kind of linguistic sophistication—although it's often wonderfully deft, as when Burgundy greets his date, Veronica, with the line, "It truly is beauty and the beast—and a handsome beast at that." The movie has a free-associational quality, and something else: an atmosphere of fooling around and taking chances.
It should be said that Anchorman is a shockingly ugly movie, and that the lighting does no favors for Christina Applegate, whose face is weirdly tight in some shots.

Anchorman does indeed require a heavy caution to viewers: there is a great deal of innuendo-heavy dialogue and frequent genital-oriented punchlines.
Anchorman should be off-limits to young viewers, and grownup viewers should be cautioned that the film contains harsh language, a great deal of sexual innuendo and genital-related sight gags, a jarring act of violence against an animal (played in the most cartoonish fashion), and comical Monty Python-esque violence between news anchors.
Anchorman is merely the latest in a long string of hugely disappointing films from funnymen who would serve their young fans better if they pulled their minds and their scripts out of the gutter."

It's also funnier than an "SNL" film deserves to be, while still featuring those flat, bizarrely misconceived passages of humorlessness that are the hallmark of spinouts such as "It's Pat" and "The Ladies Man." There are fewer of those moments here, though, and that, gentle reader, must be called progress.
Applegate's a trooper, and Ferrell's amusing enough, but this is a step back from his commercial triumph with last year's "Elf." Ron's the kind of self-pitying boor the comedian did to death on "SNL" -- characters whose "comedy" came from their bulldozing obnoxiousness rather than any real wit in the writing or playing.
Ferrell's timing is superb in "Anchorman," but the material's terribly patchy, and when he goes into overkill mode, you can see some of the blind self-love that has made Mike Myers's career such a shambles.

Anchorman is funny from beginning to end, mainly thanks to Ferrell's incessant and skillful need to be zany at all moments of filming.
For instance, for the entire movie all of the news stations are clambering over the story of a pregnant panda at the zoo, labeling it as "the story of the decade." Funny enough, this isn't too far from the truth as local news tends to put a huge emphasis on unimportant animal stories.

The time, we’re told, is the 1970s, “a time before cable, when the local anchorman reigned supreme.” The place is San Diego, and the anchorman reigning supreme is Channel 4’s Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell).
The weakness of “Anchorman” is that once the elements are all in place, that’s all there is to the script.
She plays the role maybe a little too straight; at times she doesn’t seem to fit into the rest of the “Anchorman” universe, which includes mock-gang fights and talking dogs.
