The Ancient Khmer Highway was a roadway going northwest between Angkor and Phimai, now in Thailand.
While it was not the only such road built by the Khmer, it was the most important one.

The looting, according to the guardian, was not done during the Khmer Rouge years, but as late as 1989, when fighting between the Khmer Rouge and Government troops in the area left the area outside the control of any one group.
This is one of the oldest standing wats in the area because the Khmer Rouge used it as a prison instead of destroying it.
I thought I had really found an ancient treasure, but alas, all these carvings were done in the past 20 years, according to a young monk and an old woman, the only persons we could find.

Korat is still a transient town with its major tourist purpose being the stopover for a visit to the Khmer ruins at Phimai.
The bonus is that by visiting the temple, a short 10km sidetrip from Highway 2 between Korat and Phimai, one is able to pass through the knife making villages of Ban Long Thong and BaanMakha as well as find a wat with resident monks - and certainly less visited.
