The names Ancistrus dolichopterus and Ancistrus temminckii, widely used, are almost certainly wrong the majority of the time.
A huge problem is that the colour and patterning of my fish (like most Ancistrus) is so variable depending on conditions and their mood: from mustard-coloured to almost fl, bars, spots or plain and with or without white tips on the tail and dorsal.
Although I can't be certain, I'm fairly sure that this was due to the hungry Ancistrus rasping away at algae growing on the sealant in the corner.

Ancistrus Dolichopterus is one of the three or four names that are commonly used in books to describe some specie of Ancistrus that is usually listed in the catfish section of the book.
Dolichopterus, it's just some fish of Ancistrus genus that happens to be available to the author of the fish-book.
Since there are about 50 different species of ancistrus, where almost all have dark brown body with lighter spots, they all look prety similar to someone who hasn't been studying this a lot.

Common Ancistrus males generally have no fear of developing their bristles, even if a small tank is full of them.
