  About Ancoats
Ancoats is often referred to as the world's first industrial suburb an edge-of-town industrial estate, built on a Georgian street grid.
Ancoats saw its fair share of casualties during the two World Wars and contributed to the war effort, with the mills producing military uniforms and parachute silks.
The aim is to rebuild Ancoats as a place where 5,000 people will live, work and relax, either in regenerated historic buildings or new properties of the highest quality.

Before the late 18th century, Ancoats had still retained a semi-rural aspect, but by 1800 it had been transformed into an effective industrial suburb, dominated as it was by the new steam driven Murray Mill by 1789 and the recently completed Ashton Canal which provided material and goods transportation in and out of the city.
Apart from textile spinning and weaving, Ancoats was also a major hat manufacturing district, and the William Plant Hat Works continued to operate from their location on Great Ancoats Street until the early 1970s.
Ancoats Old Hall is said to have been as fine a house as any in Manchester in its day - its imposing fl and white timber structure dominated the corner of Every Street for many years.

These Ancoats mills were probably the first example of the machinery layout which later became widespread in the Lancashire cotton industry.

There used to be four other important connections to branch canals: the Islington Branch Canal in Ancoats; the Stockport Branch Canal from Clayton to Stockport (Heaton Norris); the Hollinwood Branch Canal from Fairfield to Hollinwood; and the Fairbottom Branch Canal from Waterhouses to Fairbottom.
The first section between Ancoats Lane to Ashton-under-Lyne and Holllinwood was completed in 1796, followed by the lines to Heaton Norris and Fairbottom in 1797.
Benjamin Outram was retained to complete the final section between Ancoats Lane and the Rochdale Canal including the Piccadilly Basin.
