Arequipa is the largest Andean city in Peru, located in the south west of the country in the Chili River Valley, which lies at an elevation of 2300m on the western slope of the Andes.
When the water levels are high in the wet season, birding is done from the road; however, during the dry season the lake is a salt flat (you can walk towards the lake).
From this viewpoint, early in the morning (before sunrise) you can watch the Andean Condor rise from their roost, taking advantage of the thermals of the place, soar upwards from the depths and glide without flapping their wings, after that the condors take to the skies.

The very high water level had pushed the birds close to the road, and we were soon enjoying superb views of all three species of flamingos, as well as Andean Goose, Puna Plover and Grey-breasted Seedsnipe.
As usual, the lake was teeming with waterbirds, both resident Andean species such as White-tufted Grebe, Puna Ibis, Puna Teal and Andean Duck, and migrant waders from North America.
We had barely finished lunch when an adult Andean Condor drifted lazily into view and passed almost directly overhead, before circling for almost ten minutes against a backdrop of some of the most spectacular Andean scenery ­ a truly unforgettable Andean experience and undoubtedly one of the highlights of the trip.

We made frequent stops on the altiplano (for ducks and finches), in particular at Lake Huayrapan (near Caracollo) for Andean Negrito, Flamingo and Flicker.
We found a large lake several miles south-east of Cochabamba that held lots of Andean Duck among others.
Despite this it held large numbers of flamingos, several Andean Avocet, Puna Plover and large numbers of ducks but no Rush Tyrants.
