Tiwanaku is recognized by Andean scholars as one of the most important precursors to the Inca Empire, flourishing as the ritual and administrative capital of a major state power for approximately five hundred years.
The ruins of the ancient city state are near the south-eastern shore of Lake Titicaca, about 72 km (44 miles) west of La Paz, Bolivia.
The Tiwanaku art style is distinctive, and, together with the related Huari style, defines the Middle Horizon of Andean prehistory.

This website shares the first results of a project to set native Andean terms in the context of their use in 16th-Century colonial writings and to highlight the bilingual nature of the descriptions the Spanish authors of the time used to explain the realities of Andean life to their readers.
Among its goals are the fostering of Andean identity, development and emancipation of the Andean community, and the Andinization of public education and religious institutions in indigenous zones.
Emphasis is on preserving and validating Andean culture and reconstructing history from a native point of view.
