Texas seceded from the union on 01 Feb 1861 and in April of 1861 the first group of volunteer troops left Anderson County.
A county judge, John H. Reagan, who was later to be a major driving force in the expansion of Anderson County after the war, was a cabinet member of the Confederate government, serving as the postmaster general.
The rural county of Anderson is the 52nd largest of the 254 counties in Texas; consisting of 1,072 square miles with an estimated population of 48,024 in 1990, with a population density 47.60 residents per square mile; the average density in Texas is 65.6 persons per square mile.

In 1846 Anderson County was formed and named after Kenneth L. Anderson, who was the Vice-President of Texas from 1844 until the state's annexation.
Houston and Mound Prairie both wanted to be the county seat, but by law it had to be in the geographic center of the county, so the city of Palestine as the county seat was established.

Magnolia was on the Trinity River near the intersection of Farm Road 1990 and State Highway 294, ten miles southwest of Palestine in southwestern Anderson County.
It was established in the early 1840s as a Trinity River cotton port and was named for a large magnolia tree in the center of the townsite.
By the 1930s it was no longer shown on the county highway map, though its name was preserved in that of the two schools that stood on the site of the former town.

Ralph B. Quarles died in Hood County, Texas in 1895, and Annie Quarles moved to Anderson County soon thereafter.

Finally a distinguishing mark of Palestine is that it is home to the NASA Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility, which has flown 1700 high-altitude balloons for universities and research agencies.
Palestine entered the news in February 2003, as one of the East Texas towns that received much of the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster debris.
