An impact crater (impact basin, astrobleme or sometimes crater) is a circular or oval depression on a surface, usually referring to a planet, moon, asteroid, or other celestial body, caused by a collision of a smaller body (meteor) with the surface.
Few underwater craters have been discovered because of the difficulty of surveying the sea floor; the rapid rate of change of the ocean bottom; and the subduction of the ocean floor into the Earth\'s interior by processes of plate tectonics.
The distinctive mark of an impact crater is the presence of rock that has undergone shock-metamorphic effects, such as shatter cones, melted rocks, and crystal deformations.

As the number of impact craters increases on a surface, the appearance of the surfaces changes; this can be used to establish the age of extraterrestrial terrain.
Current estimates of the rate of cratering on the Earth suggest that from one to three craters with a width greater than 20 kilometers are created every million years.
Non-explosive volcanic craters can usually be distinguished from impact craters by their irregular shape and the association of volcanic flows and other volcanic materials.

Data from well-studied complex craters on the Earth suggest that the excavation cavity of complex craters is on the order of 0.5 to 0.65 times the diameter of the apparent crater [19]; the maximum depths of excavation are on the order of 0.09-0.12 times the excavation cavity diameter [19].
A 100-km-diameter crater on Earth (rim-to-rim diameter with 25% enlargement due to slumping) is only a factor of 12 greater than the impactor diameter for a vertical impact and reduces to 6 for a 15 degree impact angle based on scaling relations given in (1).
The inner rings and crater rims of venusian peak-ring craters (or basins) are morphologically similar to inner rings and crater rims, respectively, of peak-ring craters on the Moon, Mars, and Mercury.

 Impact crater Summary
An impact crater is a physical scar on a planetary body's surface (topographic depression or geological structure) that is the result of hypervelocity impact by a minor planet, such as an asteroid, comet, or meteorite.
Geologists distinguish an impact crater, which is rather easily seen, from an impact structure, which is an impact crater that may be in a state of poor preservation.
Multiring craters (also called multi-ring basins) are impact craters with depth to diameter ratios like complex impact craters, but they possess at least two outer, concentric rings (marked by normal faults with downward motion toward crater center).

Impact craters are found on nearly all solid surface planets and satellites.
Simple craters are generally less than four kilometers across.
Some volcanic features can resemble impact craters, and brecciated rocks are associated with other geological formations besides impact craters.

Leif Erland Andersson (1944–1979) was a Swedish astronomer.
Andersson calculated the first observable transits of Pluto and Charon to occur in the early 1980s, but did not live to see them.
Andersson was a child prodigy who won the Swedish television quiz show 10.000-kronorsfrågan ("The 10,000 crown question") twice, the first time at age 16.

Elachi (1976) also plotted his small crater depths to their diameters, finding that for his small sample of craters less than 30 kilometers in diameter, the ratio of the crater depth was constant at 0.2.
Hale and Head (1979) measured the characteristics of crater diameter, rim crest height and central peak height for 90 nearside and 85 farside craters from the LTO map series for craters larger than 17 km in diameter.

IAU spelling changes pre 1982 8 craters whose spelling was changed prior to AW82 by the IAU but for which the changes were rejected by AW82 on the grounds that the older versions were more familiar and established in the literature.
Note that the crater Greaves appears in AW82 under its correct name and also under its old name of Lick D. For non-craters, I have adopted the traditional nomenclature of AW82 in which the "Mons" is omitted for mountains Pico, Piton, R:umker, Gruithuisen Gamma/Delta, Hadley Delta, rather than the IAU version with Mons added.
For the farside craters, lettered and otherwise, someone needs to go through the early farside maps and catalogs and identify the current names with early designations to see when features were first identified.

Signs of the Times Forum / Giant rock growing in Mount St. Helens' crater
The rock in the crater began growing last November, steadily moving west and pushing rock and other debris out of its way as it goes.
But it soon became clear that magma was on the move, confirmed by the emergence of fire-red lava between the old lava dome and the south crater rim a few weeks after the seismic activity began.
Scientists flew a helicopter into the crater late last week to adjust equipment and take photographs that will likely be used to determine just how much the new lava dome has grown the last several months.

In fact, the newfound crater, in Egypt, was likely carved by a space rock that was itself roughly 0.75 miles wide in an event that would have been quite a shock, destroying everything for hundreds of miles.

At least that seems to be the opinion of Harri Andersson, Professor of Human Geography at the University of Turku, who finds these obscure wastelands fascinating.

What especially attracted the attention of the conference audience in Andersson’s presentation was the inventory of greenfield sites, which was a completely new perspective.
