Topic: Andesine

  ANDESINE (Sodium Calcium Aluminum Silicate)
Andesine is only a minor constituent in most granites and syenites.
Andesine is a member of the Plagioclase Feldspar Group.
Andesine by definition must contain 70-50% sodium to 30-50% calcium in the sodium/calcium position of the crystal structure.

Andesine is an intermediate member of the plagioclase series, close to Labradorite.
The "Chinese Andesine" (also called "Tibet Sunstone" or "Tibet Andesine") on the market is not as pure, and the red stones appear to have a brownish tone that is not present in the Congo Andesine.
In addition, Andesine is considerably rarer than Tanzanite; compare the few hundred stones of Andesine found to date to the tens of thousands of Tanzanites.

The ankaramites and alkali olivine basalts are characterized by the presence of large xenocrysts of rimmed chromium diopside, titaniferous salite, olivine (Fo83 to Fo88), magnetite and sometimes plagioclase (bytownite rimmed by labradorite).
The trachytes are characterized by phenocrysts of aegirine-augite, anorthoclase, magnetite, biotite and sometimes andesine rimmed by an alkali feldspar.
The phenccrysts of the latite andesites and trachyte lie in a groundmass consisting of andesine, alkali feldspar, magnetite, hematite and biotite.

 Andesine - LoveToKnow 1911
ANDESINE, a member of the group of minerals known as plagioclase felspars, occupying a position in the isomorphous series about midway between albite (NaA1S1308) and anorthite (CaAl2S1208); its chemical composition and physical characters are therefore intermediate between those of the two extremes of the series.
Distinctly developed crystals or crystallized specimens are rarely met with, the mineral usually occurring as embedded crystals and grains in the igneous and gneissic rocks, of which it forms a component part.

Both Andesine and Labradorite are extremely rare and difficult to find gemstones and until now it was not known if the latest gemstone find in 2002 was Labradorite, Andesine or something else.
The comparison is not being made because of the color of the gemstone (both are spectacular but they are not even similar in color), but for the small amount of rough found and the short lived mining expected for this gemstone find (rumor says it is almost mined out already).
Andesine is a pricier gemstone than Labradorite and with the information that this is a Brand New Gem it is expected that these appraisal prices will escalate dramatically.

 Plagioclase Summary
For example, a plagioclase crystal may consist of an andesine core (30–50% anorthite) surrounded by thin shells or zones of labradorite (50–70% anorthite) alternating with zones of andesine.
Andesine is a characteristic mineral of rocks such as diorite which contain a moderate amount of silica and related volcanics such as andesite.
Labradorite is the characteristic feldspar of the more basic rock types such as diorite, gabbro, andesite or basalt and is usually associated with one of the pyroxenes or amphiboles.

Most feldspars, which include the very closely related plagioclases labradorite and andesine, are about the same hardness as Tanzanite: 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale.
The TV Host said that they knew that in order for them to unequivocably say that the material was Andesine, the "Labradorite" must contain certain mineral elements - since they could not test all the material, they felt more comfortable calling it "Labradorite" until they could provide conclusive results from testing.
Well, he went on to say that red labradorite used to be called andesine.

The least altered rocks contain plagioclase feldspars with microprobe determined compositions that range from anorthite to albite but with most analyses falling in the range from calcic-andesine to calcic-oligoclase (Figure 23).
In contrast to the strong chemical differences in plagioclase feldspars in rocks of magmatic and metasomatic origin, the potassium feldspar in magmatic assemblages is not significantly different in composition from that in rocks that have undergone potassium metasomatism.
Potassium feldspar ranges in composition from Or to Or when in association with either andesine or albite (Figures 23 and 24).

Other companies also sold the stone as andesine, "Congo sunstone," "red labradorite," or occasionally the more factual "red feldspar." And just to make things a little more confusing, the same material is also found in green.
The gems sold as andesine are probably just that -- a feldspar with the right blend of elements to put it in the andesine category.
Genuine andesine of facetable quality is very rare, and priced accordingly -- up to $1,700 per carat for the best examples.

Bytownite and labradorite are characteristic of igneous rocks of gabbroic composition and of the anorthosites; andesine, of andesites and diorites; oligoclase, of monzonites and granodiorites; albite, of granites and granitic pegmatites.
The albite of pegmatites is of two distinct types; massive and lamellar, the latter widely referred to as cleavelandite.
The plagioclases are also common in metamorphic rocks; in low-grade schists and gneisses, the plagioclase is typically albite; in medium-grade rocks, it is typically oligoclase or andesine.
