Ando's concrete is often referred to as "smooth-as-silk." He explains that the quality of construction does not depend on the mix itself, but rather on the form work into which the concrete is cast.

Nara ningyo are cypress wood (hinoki) dolls which are carved using a technique called “itto-bori” or one-knife carving.
Likely introduced from China during the Nara period, the plum (“ume”) was initially the flower most frequently mentioned in Japanese poetry, and was celebrated for its sweet perfume, delicate blossoms, and habit of blooming at the end of winter.

In "Nara no Ogawa," the main theme is the cool autumn-like breeze and the flow of the stream in which people are performing a body-cleansing ritual by bathing which is called Misogi.
"Nara" in this waka is not the Nara, which is one of the former capitals in Nara Prefecture.
According to Tsuguo Ando, "Nara no Ogawa" is Mitarashi-gawa, which flows through the ground of Kamigamo Shrine in Kyoto.

I just saw Tadao Ando's Church of the Light in Ibaraki, Japan the other day as I was making my way through Osaka, Kyoto, and Nara.
Now, Ando has been my favorite architect for a while now, but the reason I think I really enjoyed the Church of the Light was that I saw it in its intended context.
we did about 10 of ando's building on that trip and they all dissapointed apart from the church of the light (huge shock for a 3rd year undergrad student)...ando never learned to do good buildings much bigger than that.
