		He suppqsed that the stage of incandescence, before the globe had consolidated to the centre, lasted 2936 years, and that about 35,000 years elapsed before the surface had cooled sufficiently to be touched, and therefore to be capable of supporting living things.
		In dealing with the argument based on the secular cooling of the earth, he holds it to be perfectly allowable to assume a much higher conductivity for the interior of the globe, and that such a reasonable assumption would enable us greatly to increase our estimate of the earths antiquity.
		As for the third argument, from the age of.the suns heat, he points out that the sun may have been repeatedly fed by a supply of meteorites from outside, while the earth niay have been protected from radiation, and been able to retain much of its heat by being enveloped in a dense atmosphere.

		The answer is ONLY after the wort has been cooled and the yeast has just been pitched or is about to be pitched.
		Of course, since you have to cool the wort before you add the yeast, be prepared for a lengthy cooldown; Pyrex doesn't transfer heat very well.

		Overheating before quench is one way to do that, but soaking at a high heat, allowing to cool down to critical, then quenching at a normal temperature should be less likely to overstress the steel while keeping the large grain.
		My guess for your problem though is letting it cool too much as you work, each heat doesn't last very long unless you're working with thick steel.
		Note that where he works steel hot copper is worked cold and where steel is annealed (softened) by heating and cooling slowly, non ferrous metals are annealed by heating and quenching in water.
