The Town Paper: Wendell Cox -- Andrés Duany Debate
The event began with a presentation by Andrés Duany that was essentially his "Introduction to New Urbanism," with an emphasis on all the obstacles to development and the goal of increased choice.
DUANY: It's really an interesting and compelling presentation; you can see exactly why I was so worried when I read Randal's book, which is actually a slightly more calm version of the same kind of thing.
DUANY: The political process is responding, and the urban boundary is actually being moved as a result of the political process.

Duany: The real problem is the impulse to be avant-garde, which severs our ties with the past.
Duany: Well, I remember distinctly when one big strike was going on, I still went to the studio to work.

 TOWN PLANNING
The extraordinary contribution made by Duany was that he took the concept of patterns and pattern languages, and created a simple, and operationally feasible way of introducing this concept into effective town-planning procedure, consistent with United States conditions.
Duany is clear that it is the public realm- the walkable public realm- that requires the most Tender Loving Care in community projects and that the power that has slid over to the traffic engineer must be rewon.
Duany struggles as all of us who are concerned with the built environment with a sense of place which comes from, among other factors, a balance of privacy and community.

But Duany and his collaborators are still seeking the key to a deeper revival, both in the suburbs (where, as Duany notes, most new development occurs, and should hardly be ignored) and equally in the abandoned city.
Duany believes that it is not enough to swoop in and plant swell modernist buildings in an existing downtown, and that what is needed above all is a process of revival.
Duany's latest Herculean effort is a new model zoning code called the SmartCode, developed after four and a half years of intensive work: "by far the most difficult thing I have ever done", he says.

 Interview with Andres Duany
Andres Duany, whose family fled Castro’s Cuba in 1960, when he was 11 years old, has done more than probably any other architect in America to revive the art of traditional community design.
DUANY: Actually, one of the extraordinary successes of the New Urbanism is that wherever I go these days, it feels different from five years ago.
DUANY: One of the things that astonishes me about people who assess places like Kentlands is that they say, "Well, it has failed to do this or that," without any notion that creating a town requires time.

Duany and his wife, Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, are cofounders of Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company (DPZ), which since 1980 has planned more than 140 neighborhoods, towns, and cities, both in the United States and abroad.
Duany's lecture was presented in conjunction with the Museum's exhibition series Smart Growth and Choices for Change.
The use of coding also enables DPZ to ensure the visual harmony that Duany believes is key to achieving successful mixed use and creating an environment that is appealing to potential residents.

What about Andres Duany’s ideas don’t you like? - Cyburbia Forums
On several occasions, I have heard Mr Duany speak about the evils of uncontrolled growth, yet here he is placing his stamp on a project that is nothing more than a glorified tract housing development.
The problem, I think, is that Duany has in the past showered praise on NU that perhaps could have been better tempered and grounded by also talking about the limitations of ANY new movement in its ability to change the urban whole.
I believe the question was "what about Duany's ideas don't you like?", not "what do you think of Duany as a dude?" As planners we ought to be grateful for people like him and others who have brought an innovative perspective to city-building and not just accepted the status quo.

I am hesitant to crtiticize Duany too much since I am not sure of the particular context of his remarks.
Maybe Duany's "transferable body of knowledge" could provide the germ of change: a reprofessionalization of architecture that privileges ethics over sheer pursuit of profit.

I have had the...misfortune of working with Duany and his firm on a NU development in NC and he comes off quite snotty down right rude and self righteous.
Duany seems to be all about building new neighborhoods with a particular design...but the concept of a brand-new neighborhood seems against the ideals of New Urbanism, because it requires new land.
I would be interested to see what people think of her ideas compared to his....since she predated him by about 30 years I'm sure he was influenced by her (as maybe all of urban planning was).
