Braugher, the youngest of four children, was born in Chicago, Illinois to Sally and Floyd Braugher.
Braugher then attended the Juilliard School in New York City, receiving his M.F.A. in 1988 where he was acknowledged as the most outstanding theater student at graduation.
Braugher's first film role was in the 1989 Civil War epic Glory as Thomas Searles, a free, educated fl from the North who joins the first fl regiment in the Union Army.

Fortunately, Braugher is as good as we remember, and his fearless performance makes “Thief”; a lot more watchable than it deserves to be.
