Guardian Unlimited | Obituaries | Andre Norton
Andre Norton, who has died aged 93, is nowadays recognised as one of the most popular writers of young adult fantasy and science-fiction novels.
Born Alice Mary Norton in Cleveland, Ohio, she chose Andre Norton as a pen-name at a time when genre fiction was expected to be written by male authors, and changed her name legally in 1934.
Andre, she felt, was ambiguous enough to allow her to write for teenage boys, and many were surprised to find that "Mr Norton" turned out to be a slender, brown-haired and green-eyed young woman.

 Andre Norton Novels
In a dukedom decimated by plague, the orphaned young Willadene was assigned to the care of a distant cousin and compelled to become a scullery maid in the cousin’s second-rate inn.
Norton’s characters are likeable and well defined, and there was enough action and intrigue to keep the pages turning, although the final outcome was fairly evident by the later stages.
I still think Norton has a tendency to wrap things up too quickly at the end, but the conclusion was satisfactory and in keeping with the rest of the novel.

deseretnews.com | Science fiction and fantasy author Andre Norton dies
Norton moved to Tennessee in 1996 because she wanted to start a library for genre writers and didn't like the population explosion in Florida.
Norton opened the library in a converted three-car garage as a retreat where authors could research ancient religions, weaponry, mythology or history that they need to bring their stories to life.
Norton said detailed research matters in fiction because today's education is so inadequate that many people must get their history from novels.

Norton's fantasy and SF career spanned more than a half century and included approximately 150 novels with her full or co-authorship as well as numerous anthologies and short stories.

Andre Norton Biography | Dictionary of Literary Biography
All of Norton's novels are primarily adventure stories, romances set in the exotic and carefully described other worlds of the past, the future, parallel universes, and other planets.
Norton consistently associates evil with the denial of such bonds, or with a lack of appreciation for individuality and liberty; opportunism, willful destructiveness, and the urge to dominate through the imposition of mechanized forms of control are characteristic attributes of her villains.
The hero, Kincar s'Rud, is aided in his adventures by his bonds with a "mord" (a cross between a tamed vulture and an aggressive bat) and a "larng" (a four-eyed, hairy steed); he triumphs over the power-hungry counterparts of alternate history by his possession of a magic talisman sacred to the native religion of Gorth.
