Andrea Cesalpino (Latinized as Andreas Caesalpinus) (June 6, 1519 – February 23, 1603) was an Italian physician, philosopher and botanist.
Cesalpino repeatedly asserted the steadfastness of his Catholic principles and his readiness to acknowledge the falsity of any philosophical opinions expounded by him as Aristotelean doctrine, which should be contrary to revelation.
Cesalpino's physiological investigations concerning the circulation of the blood are well known, but even up to the present time they have been as often overestimated as undervalued.

 Revival Of Aristotelian Botany
Cesalpino (Plate X IV), it is true, was largely concerned, like the herbalists, with the mere description of plants, but the fame of his great work, ` De plantis libri X V I ' (1583), rests upon the first book, which contains an account of the theory of botany on Aristotelian lines.
Cesalpino's strength lay in the fact that he took a remarkably broad view of the subject, and approached it as a trained thinker.
The chief tangible contribution, which Cesalpino made to botanical science, was his insistence on the prime importance of the organs of fructification.

 SPECIES
Cesalpino's approach became the conceptual foundation for seminal works in classification by John Ray (1626--1705), Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656--1708) and, most famously, Carl von Linné (Linnaeus) (1708--1778).
These writers were united in their view that (1) a correct biological classification is representative of the actual order of created nature; (2) the essential characteristics of organisms can be distinguished from accidental ones; and (3) the term "species" refers to the essences of existent particulars.
Although the work of Cesalpino, Ray, and Tournefort was instrumental in the development of biological classification and in the refinement of the species concept, it was Linnaeus' work which ultimately had the greatest impact.

Cesalpino "replaced [Galen's doctrine] by the more sophisticated idea of arterio-venous plexuses in which the blood is conveyed to the organs by the arteries, although part of it comes from the veins.
With this Cesalpinus seems to have taken a progressive step in the direction of the truth - however far this is still from Harvey's idea of the closed arterio-venous circle", Cesalpino has been credited with being the first to use the phrase circulatio sanguinis (circulation of the blood) in a scientific sense (f 111)'.
His theory of the circulatio sanguinis as a rhythmic to-and-fro movement was based on the Aristotelian model of hot evaporating matter driven upward and then returning to its source after cooling; it emphasized both the continuity and the circularity of the cardiovascular system and its essentially automatic, repeating character.

With the influx of exotic species in the Age of Exploration, the number of known species expanded rapidly, but most authors were far more interested in the medinical properties of individual plants than an overarching classification system.
Cesalpino based his system on the structure of the organs of fructification, using the Aristotelian technique of logical division.
In the late 17th century, the most influential classification schemes were those of English botanist and natural theologian John Ray and French botanist Joseph Pitton de Tournefort.
