Andrea del Sarto - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
From 1509 to 1514 the brotherhood of the Servites employed Sarto, Franciabigio, and Andrea Feltrini in a programme of frescoes at Basilica della Santissima Annunziata di Firenze.
Perhaps the best known painting by Andrea del Sarto is the Madonna of the Harpies, a depiction of the Virgin and child on a pedestal, flanked by angels and two saints (Bonaventure or Francis; and John the Evangelist).
Andrea fell in love with Lucrezia (del Fede), wife of a hatter named Carlo, of Recanati; the hatter dying opportunely, Andrea married her on 26 December 1512.

 Andrea del Sarto Summary
Andrea was born in Gualfonda, close to Florence, in either 1486 or 1487: he was one of four children to Agnolo, a tailor (sarto).
Del Sarto's most grandiose monument, in the terms of the amount of time he devoted to its completion, is the grisaille series in the Chiostro dello Scalzo.
A very noticeable incident in the life of Andrea del Sarto relates to the copy, which he produced in 1523, of the portrait group of Pope Leo X by Raphael; now in the Naples Museum, the original remains at the Pitti.

 Biography
Andrea's reputation was largely made and marred by Vasari, who said that Andrea's works were 'faultless' but represented him as a weakling completely under the thumb of his wicked wife.
In Robert Browning's poem on the painter (1855) and in a psychoanalytic essay by Freud's disciple Ernest Jones (1913) attempts are made to link a supposed lack of vigour in his mellifluous art with these traits of character.
Andrea has suffered from being the contemporary of such giants as Michelangelo and Raphael, but he undoubtedly ranks as one of the greatest masters of his time.

In many cases, a highlighted link will simply take you to an example of the work of one of the artists mentioned; where a work is named, we have attempted to find the painting so named; where one is suggested, we have provided an explanatory note.
Katie Legg thinks that the arm Andrea refers to may be the left arm of the Christ child in the Louvre's Madonna "La Belle Jardinière." The elbow appears to point up, and the arm to be unnaturally twisted.
Moreover, this Madonna is found in the Uffizi's "Raphael and Andrea del Sarto Room," so that if Browning was looking at paintings by Andrea del Sarto, he would naturally have seen this one as well.
