  Biography
Orcagna (real name Andrea di Cione), the leading Florentine artist of the third quarter of the 14th century, a painter, sculptor, architect, and administrator.
Orcagna was capomaestro of Orvieto Cathedral from 1358 to 1362, supervising the mosaic decoration of the façade.
During 1368 Orcagna fell mortally ill while painting the St Matthew altarpiece (Uffizi, Florence) and this work was finished by his brother Jacopo di Cione (active 1365-98), who worked in his style and continued it to the end of the century.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Orcagna
Vasari makes Andrea Pisano his master in the art of sculpture, but this honour is more probably due to Neri di Fieravante, his sponsor when he matriculated in the Guild of "masters of stone and wood", in 1352.
Orcagna was entrusted with this work, which he completed in 1359.
Orcagna was commissioned in the following year to paint the life of the Blessed Virgin on the walls of the choir of S. Maria Novella.

Orcagna was the nickname, possibly derived from Arcangelo ('Archangel'), of Andrea di Cione, the leading Florentine artist of the third quarter of the 14th century.
Only one painting by Orcagna is signed and dated, the altarpiece of Christ in Majesty with the Madonna and Saints of 1354-7 in the Strozzi Chapel in Sta Maria Novella, Florence.
This remarkable and richly-coloured work rejects the naturalistic tradition of Giotto and his heirs, and instead presents a supernatural realm, symbolized by the gold, space-denying background against which the figures are set, with Christ, an awesome and remote judge enthroned within a mandorla of seraphim, in the exact middle.

Florence Art Guide - Andrea di Cione known asOrcagna
Andrea and his brothers Jacopo, Matteo and Nardo (who were really more craftsmen than artists) owned the most important art workshop in Florence of the period, also because all of Giotto's best students had died in the 1348 plague Maso di Banco, Bernardo Daddi.
In 1359-62 Andrea and his brother Matteo were summoned to Orvieto to direct the work on the Cathedral there but Andrea was already back in Florence by 1364 and busy working on the decoration for the facade of Santa Maria del Fiore.
According to Vasari, Orcagna also painted the frescoes, again of the Triumph of Death and the Last Judgement, in the Graveyard at Pisa; today, however, these two works are attributed to Francesco Traini instead.
