 Achenbach Family Crest
Achenbach is a habitation name, which is one of the categories of surnames that were derived from place-names.
In continental Europe, the most ancient recorded family crest was discovered upon the monumental effigy of a Count of Wasserburg in the church of St. Emeran, at Ratisobon, Germany...
In the Achenbach coat of arms as in all coat of arms the crest is only one element of the full armorial achievement.

In 1453 or 1454 Andrea Mantegna [1431-1506] married Nicolosia Bellini and in so doing allies himself professionally with her brother, Giovanni Bellini [1426-1516], to whom he imparts ideas derived from Donatelli.
At sides and in the center are several characters identified as Jacopo Bellini (the old man in the middle) and as Nicolosia and Andrea Mantegna, possibly recently married (the young couple standing at the sides facing left).
In the painting by Bellini there are two more figures, identified by critics as the mother Anna and Giovanni [at the extreme right, looking at the viewer; beside him is Mantegna: detail who is alone in the Mantegna painting: detail] himself.

He refrained from painting elements that were uglier due to the rising industrialization, and stuck to the natural beauty of landscapes.

At the age of fourteen Andreas Achenbach had already been accepted as a student at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf and a year later sold his first painting.
Whereas most of the landscape painters of the Düsseldorf school oriented themselves towards Italy, Achenbach looked more to Dutch painting for inspiration, which he had encountered during a trip through the Netherlands in 1832/33.
Jakob Ruisdael served as a great role model in Achenbach¿s conception of landscape, which for the most part is saturated with a northern soberness.

Died 25 February 1910, Summit, N.J. The five oil paintings by Whittredge in the NMAA [now Smithsonian American Art Museum] span his artistic career—from his youthful sojourn in Europe to the last decade of his life—and reveal the artist's substantial talent and rather wide range of stylistic and thematic interests.
His early studies with the Düsseldorf painter Andreas Achenbach resulted for a time in a dependence on the mannerisms of German landscape art (high-keyed palette and exaggerated grandeur of view, for example).
Of the fellow Americans with whom he traveled and painted in Europe, only Sanford Gifford, whom he met in Rome, seems to have made an impression on his style.
