Strange Horizons Reviews: The Carpet Makers by Andreas Eschbach, reviewed by Finn Dempster
Andreas Eschbach has been big news in Germany for some time, with some fourteen awards under his belt, including the SFCD award for Best Novel for this very book.
But the seemingly ephemeral meetings Eschbach arranges between his characters and his readers are carefully choreographed for maximum emotional connection, and the characters themselves so strongly motivated you can't help but get caught up in their tales.
Eschbach eschews florid, elaborate prose in favour of simple language, which is not of course a problem in itself, even if I did find myself scanning the back cover after a few chapters for any indication I was reading a children's book.

Splendid SF Novel of Ideas and Action from Andreas Eschbach | The Carpet Makers (Orson Scott Card Present's...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Andreas Eschbach's "The Carpet Makers" is truly a classic not only of German and European science fiction, but I believe too, of world science fiction as well.
Eschbach's mesmerizing tale is evocative not only of Orson Scott Card's early work, but both the prose and content are really more evocative of Ursula K. Le Guin's, most notably in her "Ekumen" or "Hainish" series of novels and short stories.
Eschbach's novel is set primarily on a distant, semi-civilized world in a galactic empire ruled by human emperors who have unlocked the secret of near immortality.

That such a magnum opus has been allowed to languish in the shadows for ten years (it first appeared in 1995) is damning evidence of how parochial SF publishing can be.

Intended for the emperor on a distant planet, the carpets are so finely made that each carpet maker can only finish one in his lifetime, working with hairs from the bodies of his wives, who are chosen for the quality and color of their tresses.
Eschbach records both the lead-up to it and the change from the viewpoints of many well-drawn characters, eventually affording a panorama of the rebels' becoming resistant to change themselves and revealing the secret of the carpets.
Eschbach is obviously a student of Orson Scott Card and the book is rife with references to such Card stories as Unaccompanied Sonata, Kingsmeat, Fat Farm and others.

The carpet makers by Andreas Eschbach - sffworld.com
It was a very pleasant read which only took three or four days: usually I don't like sf written by european authors, but this book is the proverbial "exception to the rule" and I strongly suggest it to everyone who'd like to taste something new in sf.
But, it seems, Eschbach didn't repeat himself: reviewers say that his latest work, "God's mirror", is boring and full of plotholes.
My boss and I talked about Eschbach one day, a few days later she gave me her hc copy to read.

Like the hair carpets that form the central theme to Eschbach's novel, the plot is a delicate and superb weave of many different and all well-written strands.
(You really would not guess that this is a translation, the English flows so naturally.) There is no main character, though most characters feature in more than one chapter; rather, each character plays his or her own role in illuminating Eschbach's vision of the future.
Each individual chapter could be a short story.
