A German inventor, Andreas Pavel, claimed that he had came up with a similar device called a Stereobelt (additional info and facts about Stereobelt) back in 1977.
After court battles, Pavel and Sony came to an out of court settlement in 1999.
The original blue-and-silver Walkman model TPS-L2 went on sale in Japan (A constitutional monarchy occupying the Japanese Archipelago; a world leader in electronics and automobile manufacture and ship building) on July 1, 1979.
