Andreas Razumovsky - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Razumovsky was the brother-in-law of Beethoven's patron Prince Lobkowitz.
Razumovsky was the son of Cyril Razumovsky, the last hetman of Ukraine, and nephew of Aleksey Grigorievich Razumovsky, called the Night Emperor.
To accommodate the guests, Razumovsky erected a temporary ballroom extension, heated by a flue from the palace.

Kirill Grigorievich Razumovsky - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Count Kirill Grigorievich Razumovsky, more correctly Rozumovsky, (Russian: Разумовский, Ukrainian: Розумовський) (1728-1803) was a Ukrainian Cossack who was appointed President of the Russian Academy of Sciences when he just turned 18 years old.
This was due to the influence of his brother, Aleksey Grigorievich Razumovsky, called the "Night Emperor of Russia".
Selecting Hlukhiv and Baturyn as places of hetman's residence, Razumovsky had opulent baroque palaces erected in these sleepy towns by the imperial architect Andrey Kvasov.

After completing the Razumovsky Quartets he wrote the following to the publisher Breitkopf and Hartel: "I am thinking of devoting myself entirely to this type of composition." Although today their popularity seems easy enough to understand, these quartets were not well received by Beethoven's own public who found them difficult to understand.
Razumovsky spent a vast amount of money to build a lavish new Russian embassy outside the city of Vienna on a hill overlooking the Danube.
Razumovsky's sight was damaged and his spirit was broken.

Walt Disney Concert Hall - Piece Detail
This genre, originally a medium for dispensable diversions and elegant entertainments before Haydn and Mozart turned it into a vessel for the noble and exalted expression of profound musical ideas, was ideally suited for the private performances underwritten by Beethoven's many devoted patrons.
One of the composer's most enthusiastic and effusive supporters was Russia's ambassador to Vienna, Count Andreas Razumovsky, who commissioned the three Opus 59 Quartets, which now bear his name.
He was supportive in another important way: He employed a quartet of string players whose talents allowed Beethoven the opportunity to hear his music played with precision and virtuosity.

When Count Andreas Razumovsky, Russian Ambassador to Vienna, commissioned three string quartets from Beethoven in 1805, he must surely have expected something quite different from what the composer eventually supplied.
In retrospect, of course, it is easy to see the effect that Beethoven’s nascent “Middle Period” works—at the time, either not yet completed or so new as to be barely known to Razumovsky—would have had on his approach to the quartet genre.
Rather than intimate pieces for the players and a few private listeners, these quartets were intended for a wider audience, and to that end Beethoven adapted elements of his new symphonic style to the genre.

All of Beethoven’s quartets emphasize conversation among the instruments; but the Razumovsky quartets are more discursive than their predecessors, and so unusual for their time that the first performers thought Beethoven was kidding them.
This work was marked by breathless runs in the first movement, some gorgeous playing by Chan in the sempre p e dolce parts of the slow movement, a heavily-accented scherzo (there’s another Russian theme in the trio section), and a clomping, rhythmic finale that could pass for a Dvořák furiant.
By the time we broke for intermission, I found myself convinced that the Razumovsky quartets are not three works, but one gigantic piece in three parts.

Somehow, the Takács is able to reconcile the qualities we attribute to a more traditional approach to Beethoven – the geniality, the lilting inflections, the naiveté – with the thrills we expect from a virtuoso contemporary performance.
Count Andreas Kirillovich Razumovsky, the Russian ambassador in Vienna, was one of the leading music patrons of his time, and from 1808 to 1814 he employed a string quartet, which included the well-known player Ignaz Schuppanzigh.
In fact, the Count – looking dashing in a fur-lined cape as pictured in the CD booklet – was good enough with the violin to join his employees for an occasional jam session.

59, No. 2, was the second of the three quartets that Beethoven composed in 1806 and dedicated to Count Andreas Razumovsky.
According to Czerny, this movement "occurred to [Beethoven] when contemplating the starry sky and thinking of the music of the spheres." Beethoven wrote that the second movement was to be played "with great feeling." Succeeding the second movement is a scherzo in E minor, which has a trio in E major.
It is in the trio that, at Razumovsky's suggestion, Beethoven incorporates a Russian folk melody.
