Andrei Gavrilov - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Andrei Gavrilov or Andrej Vladimirovič Gavrilov (in Russian Андрей Владимирович Гаврилов, (born in Moscow, September 21, 1955) is a Russian pianist.
In 1974 he won the International Tchaikovsky Competition and in the same year he successfully substituted for Sviatoslav Richter at the Salzburg Festival.
An excellent example of Andrei Gavrilov's virtuosity on the piano is his stunning rendition of La Campanella, a transcription by Lizst of one of Paganini's violin concertos.

The second movement was well set by Okko Kamu but Gavrilov did make light of the tension by folding his legs, slouching on to the front of the keyboard and even indulging in a little side conducting at a certain point.
Gavrilov seemed to love ever minute of it as seen by the way he engaged the audience in his flight to bring the music across.
Gavrilov's prayer to Bach's celebration of all the keys of Western Music, was nothing but pure aural balm for the soul.

Gramophone - Gramofile - The world's best classical music magazine
The first sign of trouble comes after the minicadenza in the first movement exposition, which Gavrilov concludes so artificially that the cellos and basses are completely nonplussed—wherever they placed their entry it would sound unnatural.
Apart from the mannered phrasing, of which that first flourish is an example, Gavrilov seems to be discomfited by technical obstacles which previously he would surmount with ease.
If nothing else Gavrilov's difficulties increase one's respect for performances such as the listed comparisons (but how one wishes DG could persuade Martha Argerich to take her much-vaunted account into the studio).

Gavrilov's performance yesterday was absolutely riveting, and the shamefully sparse Symphony Hall crowd knew it from early on in the first half of the program.
The audience applauded all but one of the works on the second half of the program (there were seven), and the reason for this abstinence was that the audience was too moved -- there were audible sighs in lieu of clapping.
At concert's end, Gavrilov was pleaded with for encores, of which he provided two (both Etude Tableaux).

That’s what Andrei Gavrilov is like, and to get the most out of this set you’re going to have to be prepared to take the good with the bad.
There are in fact quite a few misfires to contend with, most notably Gavrilov’s lacklustre performance of the Third Piano Concerto (his second recording of the work: the first is still awaiting reissue).
Here Gavrilov’s playing has a confident swagger about it without ever becoming oppressive, and his performance just gets better and better as the piece goes on.
