Andrei Shkuro - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Andrei Grigoriyevich Shkuro (Shkura) (Андрей Григорьевич Шкуро (Шкура) in Russian) (January 19, 1887 (O.S. January 7) – January 17, 1947) was a Lieutenant General (1919) of the White Army.
Shkuro claimed that to the detriment of the anti-Bolshevik cause, both Denikin and Wrangel did not sufficiently understand Cossack society, and that as a result some of their decisions alienated the Cossacks--even though the Cossacks in general remained deeply hostile to the policies of the Bolsheviks.
In 1941, Shkuro agreed to be one of the organizers of anti-Soviet Cossack units consisting of White émigrés and Soviet (mostly Cossack) prisoners of war in alliance with Nazi Germany.

The ROA was organized by former Red Army general Andrey Vlasov, who tried to unite all Russians in opposing the regime of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin.
Amidst the volunteers were Soviet prisoners of war, eastern workers (Ostarbeiter), and Russian White emigrés (some of whom were veterans of the anticommunist White Army during the Russian Civil War).
Meanwhile the newly captured Soviet general Andrei Andreevich Vlasov, along with his German and Russian allies, was desperately lobbying the German high command, hoping that a green light would be given for the formation of a real armed force that would be exclusively under Russian control.

The new evidence could help to untangle the truth behind one element of the most controversial - and to many allied soldiers, shameful - events in British military history, when 70,000 Cossacks and dissident Yugoslavs were forcibly repatriated by British 5th Corps from south-western Austria in June 1945.
According to the notes Mitrokhin made from KGB archives, published in the Times, a group of White Russian generals, including Pyotr Krasnov and Andrei Shkuro, were tracked to a camp in the village of Gleisdorf in Austria by Smersh, Soviet military counter intelligence.
Krasnov and Shkuro, who had never been Soviet citizens and were two of Stalin's most hated enemies, were hanged in 1947.

The Ukrainian 2nd Army and the 13th Army counter-attacked against the Whites, initially with some success, on 31 March, in an attempt to occupy the whole of the west bank of the Don and thus release troops for other fronts.
In response, Denikin's cavalry commander Andrei Shkuro attacked to the west in an attempt to outflank the Soviet right, where Makhno's brigade was still pushing forward along the coast to Rostov from Mariupol'.
Although Makhno's successes were still being lauded in central newspapers, and his popularity was at its height, the problem of the commissars continued to worry the Bolsheviks.

 Cossacks in World War
On 27 May 1945, in accordance with the agreement signed in Vienna by British and Soviet authorities, the British began to hand over to the Soviets the interned soldiers of the Eastern formations as well as the Cossacks.
On that day, in Graz, they handed over the generals von Pannwitz, Pyotr Krasnov, and Andrei Shkuro.
All three hoped to the last that they would escape this fate, for von Pannwitz held German nationality, and the other two had emigrated from Tsarist Russia and had never held Soviet citizenship.
