Merida lecture, The Russian Seven String Guitar
Indisputably, Sychra was a major force in the development of Russian guitar music, both as one of its most prolific composers and as a pedagogue who left behind many disciples.
As one reviewer said, in these Etudes the range of the instrument is explored to the full, and the harmonic language displays a degree of sophistication shared by few guitar works of the period.
Besides Sychra who was mainly active in St. Petersburg, we have also the legacy of Mikhail Vyssotsky, a guitarist who was active in Moscow.

In addition, Donald Sauter Facsimiles of Guitar music in the Library of Congress has the "Journal of St. Petersburg" by Andrei Sychra, which he will provide for a small copying fee, 144 pages of music.
Sychra in particular sounds the most "Russian" and exotic to my ears, truly delightful.
Among the noted early19th-century composers for this instrument are Andrei Sychra, Mikhail Vysotsky, Semion Aksionov, Vasily Sarenko, Nikolai Alexandrov, and many others.

Numerous examples from literature, personal diaries, and visual arts collected in chapter two document the important important role this guitar played for the Russian noble and middle class during the first half of the nineteenth century.
Chapter three presents in detail the lives and works of the three guitarists-composers who founded the unique musical style for the instrument: Andrei Sychra, Semion Aksionov, and Mikhail Vysotsky.
The variety of ways in which Russian folk songs were incorporated into their works presents the special focus of chapter four, since it is precisely this inclusion of folk material that gives the repertoire its particularly Russian sound.

 iColdwell - Robert
Andrei Sychra (1773-1850) wrote a series of variations on the same tune, published in his Sobranie raznogo roda lekhkikh Pies' (Collection of light pieces of various types).
The title page of Sychra's theme and variations clearly identifies the theme as the Wittgenstein March by D.N. Kashin.
As obvious from the facsimile of Sychra's arrangement, the theme is identical to that used by Ferranti.

 The Guitar of the Czars
It is a fact that the repertory for the 7-string instrument, though diminished in comparison to the one for the 6-string guitar, is still thriving [ Note 5 ].
However, many guitarists of the past played both instruments: Andrei Sychra (1773-1850) himself, beside his devotion to the Russian guitar [ Note 6 ]; and certainly many others after him, such as Vasiliy Lebedev (1867-1907), Piotr Isakov (1886-1958), and many others, of whom we know nothing other than their names [ Note 7 ].
His interest in the guitar would have been known to Russian guitarists of his epoch: it is not by chance that the patriarch of the seven-string guitar, the Lithuanian Andrei Sychra, transcribed in full for two guitars two of Glinka's greatest operas: A life for the Czar and Ruslan i Ludmila.

Timofeyev decided to structure this project around an 1833 manuscript compiled by Andrei Sychra (1773-1850), the founder of the Russian seven-string guitar tradition.
In this newly-found source, Sychra collected some 42 most popular songs and romansy of his time and arranged them with guitar accompaniment.
Among the noted early19th-century composers for this instrument are Andrei Sychra, Mikhail Vysotsky, Semion Aksionov, Vasily Sarenko, Nikolai Alexandrov, and many others.

The instrument was popular in Russia throughout the 19th century and was actually invented on the Russian soil towards the end of the 18th century.
We don't know who exactly did it, but there was one person called Ignatz von Held, the other person, Andrei Sychra.
Now I'm going to try to play a piece that is mentioned in the very well-read novel, War and Peace.

Classical guitarists are always searching for quality guitar music to augment the traditional concert repertoire.
But very few people realize the magnitude and superb quality of the Russian seven-string guitar heritage, or are aware of composers such as Sychra, Vysotsky, Aksionov, Sarenko, Morkov, Vetrov, Pavlov-Azancheev, Agibalov, and many others.
This event will be a unique opportunity to explore an untapped resource for guitarists in the presence of the world experts in this field.

So this being the case, all the items in this programme are new to me, as are the composers.
According to Oleg Timofeyev, Andrei Osipovich Sychra (1775-1850) was the most prolific of the composers featured here, and seems to have most in common with Fernando Sor.
Sychra, whose two contributions on this disc, the "Divertissement sur des Airs Russes", and a transcription of the aria from the opera-ballet Opolchenie, ili Liubov' k otechestvu ("The National Guard, or Love to the Fatherland") by Catterino Cavos (1776-1840) is in keeping with the forms that Sor would have used.

My speculations above were spot on - there's hardly a problem finding a tuning that allows the piece to be played naturally.
These Sychra pieces have been a very pleasant discovery.

 Playing Guitar Russian Style
All in all, it is nice to own and play the real thing!
The seven string guitar made itself known in Russia in the 19th century thanks to Andrei Sychra, of Czech ancestry, who had written over a thousand pieces of music for the instrument (he is also considered by some to be the inventor of the seven string).
It became immensely popular with professional classical musicians as well as common folk players, nearly eclipsing the Spanish six string all the way into the mid 20th century.
