Andres Pastrana - son of former President Misael Pastrana - began his political career in the capital Bogota's city council, to which he was elected twice in the 1980s.
Andres Pastrana won the elections, and true to his promise, 18 days later the president elect was meeting FARC leader Manuel Marulanda in the jungle.
Mauricio Vargas says Mr Pastrana was optimistic that his government could negotiate with the rebels, and the government soon acceded to rebel demands for a 42,000 square kilometre safe haven.

Pastrana spends much of his time on Plan Colombia, a comprehensive program he launched as president to combat narcotrafficking, increase the presence of the Colombian government in regions controlled by drug dealers and advance peace talks with both FARC and another guerrilla group, the ELN.

Colombian president Andres Pastrana Arango visited Washington Apr. 17-18 to meet with US president George W. Bush and Republican and Democratic leaders in Congress.
After meeting with Pastrana on Apr. 17, congressional leaders announced their endorsement of a Bush administration proposal to allow US military aid for Colombia to be used for counterinsurgency operations; the aid is currently supposed to be limited to anti- drug actions.
After meeting with Pastrana, Bush reiterated his support for lifting restrictions on the aid and said he would push Congress to approve the measure.

A two-year-old peace process stalled last November when the FARC walked out of the talks, accusing Pastrana of failing to take steps against paramilitary groups.
After announcing the pact, Pastrana extended for eight more months government authorization for the demilitarized zone.
