Interview - Andrew Adamson for "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe"
Adamson: First of all, I don't think the estate would have allowed it to be adapted in a modern sort of different setting which I think that's one of the reasons they never managed to get it off the ground before.
Adamson: Oh yes, I was definitely conscious of it.
Adamson: Largely it was a decision somewhat for practical reasons and partly for story reasons.

Andrew Adamson Biography at Hollywood.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Adamson’s work during this period consisted primarily of creating animated corporate logos, opening sequences for TV shows, and animation for a number of commercials.
Adamson also continued to work in commercials, creating award-winning computer graphic effects that were far more advanced than those he’d worked on in New Zealand.
Adamson was hired to direct, and co-write the first installment, “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.” Though “Narnia” was to be a live action film, it would meld actual human actors with photorealistic computer animated creatures.

Cinema Confidential News: 12/05/05 - INTERVIEW: Andrew Adamson on "The Chronicles of Narnia"
ANDREW: It is inevitable that when you have a battle with swords, there’s going to be some commonality, but I was lucky enough to have a menagerie of creatures to deal with.
ANDREW: It’s from a line in the book that says “they were sent away from London during the war because of the air raids.” What I wanted to do was set context, give it a sense of reality.
ANDREW: That scene was the hardest one to write, we wrote hundreds of versions of that scene, and ultimately the thing that made it work was James McAvoy.

New Zealand, Narnia and Beyond - ComingSoon.net
ComingSoon.net spoke to Adamson during his recent New York press jaunt for "Narnia." With his long blonde locks and casual attire, Adamson is a warm and open guy, as jovial and friendly as you might expect from the man behind the "Shrek" phenomenon.
Adamson: I actually know Peter pretty well from a number of years ago, and there was a really nice article that came out not that long ago that was saying how C.S. Lewis had helped Tolkien get "The Hobbit" published, because he had some success with his books.
Adamson: Well, I don't know if you stayed right until the end of the credits, but I dedicated it to Isabelle and her sister, Sylvie, largely because C.S. Lewis dedicated the book to the children, and I felt like that was an appropriate thing to do.
