Andrew Cartmel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Andrew Cartmel is a British science-fiction writer and journalist.
In 1987, Cartmel was hired as the script editor for the twenty-fourth season of the iconic science-fiction programme Doctor Who, having been recommended to the producer John Nathan-Turner by the producer's agent, who had seen some unproduced scripts Cartmel had written.
Cartmel worked on the programme for the next two years, overseeing the final three seasons of its original run on BBC One.

The House on Allen Road was created by Cartmel for a DWM comic and has seen appearances in all his books, as well as Transit, and will be seen in So Vile A Sin and The Dying Days.
Cartmel largely eschews a narrative style for descriptions and dialogue, but he occasionally lets rip, most notably in Creed's 2nd person thoughts on Amy Cowan on pages 35-36: "Your fingers graze the short bristles near the roots, tracing the delicate contours of that graceful skull so full of intelligence and notions, and dreams."

BBC - Doctor Who Classic Episode Guide - Season 26
Andrew Cartmel also remained on the production team, taking him into his third year as script editor.
The Doctor's companion would in fact turn out to be effectively the pivotal character in three of the season's four stories, and - unusually - actress Sophie Aldred was given an opportunity at an early stage of the season's production to talk to the writers about the development of her character.
This was a consequence of Cartmel's preferred approach of working with his writers as a team and involving them more closely in the production than would normally have been the case in the past.

Given Cartmel's determination to keep the Doctor a mysterious figure whilst at the same time not touching at all on his companions' future origins the result is that the regulars feel as though they have been added to the novel to make it fit into the New Adventures.
Cartmel is far more concerned with Creed and Ricky, comparing and contrasting the two whilst narrating pivotal events for their family, but unfortunately he is unable to make either seem completely likeable, giving both weaker sides that make them less sympathetic.
Cartmel's writing style and extremely short chapters do make the book easy to read, but this is one of Warchild's few redeeming features.

Script editor Andrew Cartmel dismissed the idea in favor of one of his own, which was eventually revealed in the novel Lungbarrow.
Cartmel's idea was basically that the Doctor is the reincarnation of one of the original trio of Gallifreyans who created Time Lord society.
The "masterplan" elements of Cartmel's vision were added to Platt's novel; they weren't featured in the television pitch version, which became Ghost Light.

When Doctor Who fans think of Andrew Cartmel, they immediately think of the Seventh Doctor; before Virgin published anything other than novelizations of the televised episodes, Cartmel had already established himself as a major force in the Doctor Who creative pantheon with his tenure as script editor of the show.
(Of course, Cartmel adheres to long Doctor Who tradition by having the plan spectacularly collapse at the end, forcing the Doctor to succeed through a combination of luck and brilliant improvisation.)Warhead also introduces Justine and Vincent, who would become in many ways the central focus of the trilogy.
In fact, all of Cartmel's books are fairly light on plot, but that doesn't seem to concern him over-much; Cartmel writes very much to evoke a sensation of tangibility in the reader, a feeling that one could literally step into the scene he's describing.

WARLOCK is a collection of so many disparate ideas and strands that it stands as a real credit to Andrew Cartmel's skills and abilities that he not only wove them all together astoundingly well, but also managed to create a book that was engrossing, absorbing and absolutely unputdownable.
Cartmel has occasional bouts of playing too heavy-handedly with his themes, which would be enough to derail a lesser book, but isn't an unpardonable sin here.

Doctor Who LogBook - Introduction - The McCoy Years
Cartmel had been hired late in the game, so McCoy's first season, premiering in late 1987, was drawn primarily from a slush pile of scripts originally commissioned by Eric Saward for Colin Baker's Doctor.
season, Nathan-Turner and Cartmel began redirecting the series toward their renewed vision of menace and mystery; Bonnie Langford's Mel was written out of the series at the actress' request, and Sophie Aldred was introduced as Ace, a brash teenager with a penchant for home-made explosives and other forms of antisocial behavior.
Planning began for the 26th year of the show, with Andrew Cartmel enlisting a close circle of writers (including Ben Aaronovitch) to construct a running theme for the entire year.

Miss Freedom tells the story of a special covert unit sent to free Number Six from the Village, in a tale which fuses the jet-set world of Sixties spy-thrillers with the cheerily sinister microcosm of the Village.
Cartmel, a longtime fan of The Prisoner, was script editor of Doctor Who during one of its most experimental periods in the late '80s -- during which time the production team wanted to film the story The Happiness Patrol in Portmeirion as a Prisoner homage, though the budget wouldn't allow it...

'Swine Fever' is a Judge Dredd novel, penned by Andrew Cartmel, who'se scripted comics for 2000 AD and Marvel UK, in addition to several novels.
It is a very tongue in cheek novel, and I felt Cartmel did a good job of capturing some of the absurdities of the Mega-City One citizens and their way of life.
I think, if you're reading 'Swine Fever' you need to just sit back and enjoy the ride, and I'll concede, an enjoyable ride it is. As a light-hearted book 'Swine Fever' works very well, and I think the majority of 2000 AD readers will find it an entertaining read.
