The doom metal band My Dying Bride were formed by Aaron, Calvin, Andrew, and Rick in 1990.
So as the death metal scene in Europe started to evolve with groups experimenting in their own ways, My Dying Bride were about to experiment even further with the addition of session musician Martin Powell, an acclaimed violinist and piano player in 1993.
Songwriter Aaron also displayed an excellent variety of vocal styles which totally defined the album even more, altogether showing stunning musicanship by a band with a potential to break out of the underground.

APESHIT spoke with founding members, vocalist Aaron Stainthorp and guitarist Andrew Craighan, to find out what's ailing these Brides in 2004.
ANDREW: We feel more or less the same, we never really looked left or right to see what the others where doing anyway so the fact that the scene is different and our so called peers have disappeared from view really doesn't mean anything to us.
We are not interested in what might be considered the classic view or the experimental view or the neo-gothic fuck-knows-what.

Get Ready to ROCK! Review of live concert/gig by My Dying Bride and Flowing Tears on 31 October at London Astoria
The band do not play live all that often and even less frequently in the UK, but this concert clearly demonstrated that the band had prepared thoroughly for this performance and that there's still life in the old band yet.
Andrew Craighan kicked things off with a mournful guitar intro, while dry ice filled the stage and his band mates took their places.
I'm not a huge fan of My Dying Bride nor of the whole Doom genre to be honest, but the powerful, super-heavy, melancholic riffs which underpinned their sound was so entrancing I stuck around for almost all of the set.

I assume most of you have seen one (or, most likely, several) of your favourite bands more or less suddenly choosing a different path, walking away from the elements and characteristics that made them one of your favourite bands in the first place.
CoC: Another thing that I found especially remarkable was the fact that you decided to do a third version of "Sear Me" chuckles>, which, in my opinion, turned out brilliant, and I had already been blown away by the second version when I first listened to _Turn Loose the Swans_...
I remember when they were really doomy and they sounded more like Paradise Lost and MDB than Paradise Lost and MDB did, _Dance of December Souls_ and this kind of thing.

Vocalist Aaron Stainthorpe is in amazing from, alternating his attack between despair-drenched moaning drones and roaring pathos.
The interplay between guitarists Hamish Glencross and Andrew Craighan is more intimate and bone crunching than on any record in their doomy catalog.
This is the sound of bleak, the growl of hopelessness, and the wail of pain and tears borne out in throbbing bottom-end flness by drummer Shaun Taylor-Steels and bassist Ade Jackson.

British Doom gods My Dying Bride formed sometime in 1990 as some 'slower-than-usual' Death Metal act by Calvin Robertshaw (guitars), Aaron Stainthorpe (vocals), Andrew Craighan (guitars) and Rick Miah (drums).
What they played was soon to become the first example of the second wave of Doom Metal, which mixed elements of other uber-heavy genres such as Death and Black Metal.

The performance of Shawn Steeles is a very pleasant surprise, because apart from his familiar bombasting playing he has also employed more plain forms of drum playing.
The rest of the band (Andrew Craighan and Ade Jackson) are strength values and cannot be argued.
The track list is equal to the highlights of the bands discography, except from "My Wine in Silence", which is the weakest moment of the CD.

With that said, this is an unquestionably solid release, very dark (but sometimes on the verge of being a bit repetitive and a bit ‘too’ dramatic) and true to form, featuring ten tracks of dramatic, orchestral Gothic splendour.
The vocals are extremely deep and throaty, and they work quite well actually, not at all coming across as basic Andrew Eldritch, Carl McCoy, or Peter Steele rip offs.
They are actually deeper than that, and as I mentioned earlier, if any comparison is warranted, they can be likened to the deepest of Dani Filth’s various clean vocal styles.
