Andrew Gregg Curtin (April 22, 1817 - October 7, 1894) was a U.S. politician who served as Governor of Pennsylvania during the American Civil War.
During the Civil War, Curtin organized the Pennsylvania reserves into combat units, and oversaw the construction of the first Union military camp for training militia.
Curtin was very active during the Gettysburg Campaign, working with Major General Darius N. Couch and Major Granville O. Haller to delay Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia and prevent it from crossing the Susquehanna River.

During the Civil War he was one of the closest and most constant advisers of President Lincoln, and one of the most efficient, most energetic and most patriotic of the war governors of the North.
Pennsylvania troops were the first to reach Washington after the presidents call, and from first to last the state, under Governor Curtins guidance, furnished 387,284 officers and men to the Northern armies.
In 1868 he was one of the counsel for President Andrew Johnson in his impeachment trial, and opened for the defence in a remarkable two-days speech.

Andrew Gregg Curtin was governor through one of Pennsylvania's darkest periods of history, the American Civil War.
Born April 22, 1815, in Bellefonte, Centre County, Curtin was the son of Roland Curtin, a Scotch-Irish immigrant iron founder, and his second wife, Jane Gregg, who was the daughter of a major Pennsylvania politician and president pro tem of the U.S. Senate, Andrew Gregg.
The Curtins placed a high value on education for their seven children and young Andrew was sent to preparatory school, first in Harrisburg, then to the academy at Milton, an institution of exceptional reputation and operated by Rev. David Kirkpatrick.

Curtin did much toward reforming and perfecting the school system of the state, in his annual report of 1855 he recommended to the legislature the establishment of normal schools, and his suggestion was adopted.
