Andrew Cardoza Fluegelman (born November 27, 1943--presumably died July 6, 1985) was a programmer and attorney best known as the inventor of what is now known as the shareware business model for software marketing.
Fluegelman edited PC World magazine from its introduction in 1982 until 1985, and Macworld magazine from its introduction in 1984 until 1985.
In 1985, Fluegelman, already suffering from colitis, was diagnosed with cancer.

He (A formally registered symbol identifying the manufacturer or distributor of a product) trademarked the term "freeware" in order to retain control of the word's meaning, which ironically had the unintended result of causing other developers to use the subsitute term "shareware" in order to avoid infringing the trademark.

In 1985, Fluegelman was taking medication for Colitus, which was having a deep effect on his personality, with mood swings and depression.
In July of that year, he was informed that he had cancer; he drove to the Golden Gate Bridge, left a suicide note in his car, and, it is presumed, committed suicide.

The term shareware was coined by Bob Wallace to describe his word processor PC-Write in the mid-1980s.
Wallace came up with the name that stuck, but many consider the "fathers" of the shareware marketing model to be Jim Button and Andrew Fluegelman.
