Tennessee Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans -- The Forrest/Gould Affair
Gould took this to be a mortal insult and went straight to Forrest's Headquarters at the Masonic Building in downtown Columbia to confront the General.
Gould was fading fast but he saw Forrest come in the door and he rolled off the table and went out the back as Forrest sent a bullet after him.
Gould, now at the edge of consciousness, retreated only a short way before he fainted from the loss of blood and fell into the high weeds behind the row of buildings.

ENOUGH ROPE with Andrew Denton - Transcripts: Shane Gould
ANDREW DENTON: Move forward about a year from that point, and your dad had reported you as missing, you'd left home with thirty bucks in your pocket and hopped on a train to go somewhere, anywhere from where you were.
ANDREW DENTON: And you wrote a book, 'Tumble Turns', about your life, and you talked about the marriage fracturing, and towards the end there being an argument and your husband in the heat of the moment hitting you.
ANDREW DENTON: When you step onto that starting block on April the first, you're 47, you're going to be a grandmother later this year, congratulations, hard to believe, and yet you reckon that you're swimming better now than when you won gold at the age of 15.

Astronomers measure mass of a single star - first since the Sun
That study matched data from the microlensing event to pictures of that part of the sky taken by Hubble, and showed that the lens was indeed a visible red star.
He examined the problem, and discovered that the same microlensing data could be used to calculate two radically different solutions for the mass and the distance to the star.
Gould is on the SIM science team, and leads the project that will use the satellite to search for microlensing events.

Gould later in life would be similarly censured (though never really punished) for his extraordinary and continuous violations of people's and even the public's, trust, but he never ceased to walk away from his schemes with money bulging in his pockets.
Gould never actually attended to the management of the Erie-his wealth was always based not on the successful operation of his enterprises, but on his ability to inflate their value and then sell off - and soon the carrier would experience severe financial difficulties.
Gould schemed to add new railroads to the line, expanding Erie train service from New York to Chicago; but soon, other investors in the company challenged his leadership, and he was forced out of management (though, as usual without personal losses).

Andrew Gould, an assistant professor of astronomy, has proved false the widely held theory that dark matter -- which may make up about 90 percent of the universe's mass -- is comprised primarily of tiny red dwarf stars.
Gould and John Bahcall, with the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J., led a team of scientists who used images obtained from the Hubble Space Telescope to reach their conclusions.
Gould said that although the Hubble telescope images don't solve the mystery of dark matter, the findings shouldn't be perceived negatively.

Gould and his coauthors calculated that NASA's upcoming Space Interferometry Mission (SIM) would be able to detect habitable planets near stars significantly more massive than the sun.
Gould is on the science team that is helping to plan the SIM mission, and he is working to define the capabilities of the satellite.

Jay Frogel and Andrew Gould, professor and associate professor of astronomy at Ohio State, were looking for evidence of the so-called "death star" scenario where a passing star might alter the current orbits of comets near our solar system and send them our way.
Gould's analysis of the HIPPARCOS catalogue showed that it should be sensitive enough to detect zero proper motion of any stars brighter than 8th magnitude.
Gould said that these bright stars are important candidates for the death star scenario.

He and his colleagues found the star’s mass using a combination of old and new astronomical techniques, along with one of the most advanced instruments on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) -- as well as a measure of good luck.
Then three other astronomers -- Andrew Drake of Princeton University, Kem Cook of Lawrence Livermore National Lab, and Stefan Keller of Australian National University -- used Hubble’s Advanced Camera for Surveys to measure the distance to the star unambigously.
Because microlenisng events that carry enough information to measure the mass are extremely rare -- astronomers see only a few of them per decade -- MACHO-LMC-5 may be the only single star that will undergo such a mass measurement until SIM is launched in 2009.

He and study coauthors Eric B. Ford of Princeton University and Debra A. Fischer of the University of California, Berkeley, determined that SIM is sensitive enough for the task.

Gould and his colleagues have submitted a paper announcing the planet to Astrophysical Journal Letters, and have posted the paper on a publicly available Internet preprint server, http://arXiv.org.

Gould's initial estimate is that the new planet is approximately 15,000 light years away, but he will need more data to refine that distance, he said.

The same technique could be used to find dark matter within our galaxy, and might even help account for the missing mass of the universe, which has so far eluded detection by the most powerful instruments, including the Hubble Space Telescope.
An and Gould's method relies on the observer being able to gauge the position of a microlensing event from two separate locations that are distant from each other.
But even without SIM at their disposal, An and Gould were still able to test their method, because the Earth moved far enough in its orbit over the 200 days to give the astronomers the two distant points of reference they needed.
