Handled the ball - Iridis Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-18)
Since Vaughan seemed to be picking the ball up to pass it back to the Indians, it is unclear why he wasn't given out 'obstructing the field'.
Hilditch's dismissal was even more controversial than Vaughan's.
Strictly speaking, Hilditch had broken the law and the umpire was correct to bring him out.

Cricinfo - Players and Officials - Andrew Hilditch
Andrew Hilditch was a qualified solicitor but one who lacked the IQ to cut out the hook, a stroke that consistently brought about his downfall.
Hilditch had no reasonable defence, and was dumped for good as Australia turned to Geoff Marsh and David Boon.
It was strangely out of character: Hilditch was generally a composed batsman, and a responsible character - he was made captain of New South Wales after only two first-class games.

Solicitor Andrew Hilditch came into the Australian side at the time of World Series Cricket and so impressed with his leadership skills he was earmarked as a future Test captain.
Hilditch made his debut for New South Wales in 1976-77 and made his Test debut against Mike Brearley's England side in 1978-79.
On debut he fell victim to the erratic running of his opening partner, the 'Kamikaze Kid' Graeme Wood, and was run out for 3.

CNNSI.com - Cricket - Australia turns attention to finding Waugh's successor - Thursday February 14, 2002 06:29 AM   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-18)
While Waugh was the natural successor to Mark Taylor when he was stripped of the one-day leadership in 1997, there is no obvious replacement this time and the uncertainty threatens to turn the leadership race into a divisive power struggle.
But their preferred choice still must be approved by the Australian Cricket Board's (ACB) directors, and it is not certain they will support the selectors' nomination.
But the four selectors who unanimously agreed to axe Waugh -- Trevor Hohns, Allan Border, David Boon and Andrew Hilditch -- did find some allies of their own who applauded their brave decision to sack a national hero.
