Hamilton was granted the land by William Penn's heirs and is credited with founding the city of Lancaster with his son James.
Companies preceding the Hamilton Watch Co. on the factory site were: the Adams and Perry Company, founded in 1874; the Lancaster Watch Co., founded un 1877 as a result of an infusion of capital and the reorganization of Adams and Perry; and the Keystone Watch Co., the result of yet another reorganization.
The Hamilton Watch Co. was founded by merging Keystone with the Illinois-based Aurora Watch Co. The factory opened in the summer of 1892 after machinery from Aurora was moved to Lancaster.

He served under General J. Pinckney Henderson at the Battle of Monterrey and later was appointed secretary of state by Governor E.M. Pease (1853-1857) and state commissioner of claims in 1858.
Governor P. Hansbrough Bell appointed "Colossal Jack" Hamilton attorney general in 1849, and he was elected state representative from Travis County in 1851 and 1853.
Hamilton did not finish his term, but turned the governor's office over to the secretary of state while he went to Philadelphia to fight President Johnson's plan for Reconstruction.

HAMILTON, Andrew, governor of New Jersey, born in Scotland; died probably in Burlington, New Jersey, 20 April, 1703.
The appointment finally received the royal sanction, in the session of the provincial assembly in October, 1702, the representatives of the territories refused to meet those of the province, claiming the privilege of separation under a new charter, and expressing their firm determination to remain apart.
It was to Andrew Hamilton that the colonies were indebted for the first organization of a postal service, he having obtained a patent from the crown for the purpose in 1694.--His son, John, acting governor of New Jersey, died in Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

 Hamilton Village
Hamilton Village, or Hamiltonville, was on the grounds of the Hamilton family and was laid out by William Hamilton sometime between 1804 and 1809.
Hamilton was a prominent Mason, and it was largely through his financial and architectural efforts that the building which later came to be known as Independence Hall was constructed.
Hamilton Village has the distinction of having one of the first public schools, the West Philadelphia School, which opened in a three story brick building built in 1842 at the southwest corner of 38th and Spruce Streets.
