Andrew Lang, born in Selkirk in 1844, died in Banchory in 1912.
What Lang singularly failed to do was to write either a lasting novel or a really striking poem, but he was a very significant literary figure.
This sums Lang up: his work was rarely the product of completely original scholarship, he was, at times, slapdash, and he allowed his own opinions (always interesting) to intrude into works which perhaps ought to have been more even-handed.

Andrew Lang's colored fairy books are justifiably famous, and this (along with "The Red Fairy Book") is one of the best of the series.
Since this was the third book in the series, he was not yet scraping the barrels of world fairy tales for the leavings; contrariwise, however, the first volume (Blue) has all of Ye Olde Stand-byes, while this and Red have tales just as wonderful that are less well known.
Despite Lang's flaws -- most notably, his heroines have a way of turning passive -- there are far worse ways to introduce a child to the spirit of wonder tales than this volume.

Andrew Lang Biography | Dictionary of Literary Biography
More than any other British writer of the second half of the nineteenth century, Andrew Lang successfully championed the fairy tale as appropriate reading material for children.
Despite Lang's repeated assertions in prefaces to the color fairy books that he was merely the editor and did not invent the stories, his readers frequently incorrectly credited him as their author.
While Lang selected the tales, assigned the translations, and wrote the prefaces to the color fairy books, his wife, Leonora Blanche Lang, did much of the other work of the series.
