Andrew Lippa, who wrote the book, music, and lyrics, revives the traditional breed of musical theater which faded away in the 1980s and 1990s, an act of loyalty that Hall admires.
Lippa's musical is one of two different versions of "The Wild Party" that premiered in 2000.
Along with the electric guitar, Lippa is criticized for the over-abundance of show-stopping numbers in the score, which lacks the subtlety of LaChuisa's version.

Never mind that Lippa's very adult musical is being performed in a cramped Chicago storefront, or that a good percentage of the "BoHo" cast has yet to graduate from college.
Lippa's score deserved more attention and admiration when his show debuted at the Manhattan Theatre Club in 2000, and this production's formidably gifted cast captures the youthful, hedonistic, self-destructive pulse of the Jazz Age -- its dangerous, crash-and-burn, live-for-the-moment fervor-- with riveting intensity.
Lippa's sung-through score is tremendously expressive and varied, and enormously difficult, with 30 songs -- from big dance numbers, to scorchy torch tunes, to exquisite ballads -- that can truly stand on their own.

Lippa's adaptation, particularly the way Uptown Players handle it, is the more down and dirty of the two, more drenched in the divine decadence of Cabaret and Threepenny Opera.
Lippa's 27-song score is dissonant and frequently harsh on the ear, wandering musically from jazz themes to Bernstein-tinged ballads to amorphous nonsense.
