I'd like to say yes, but no. Because Andrew [Lloyd Weber] was negotiating for the last two years to get the rights back from Warners, so it just happened at the end of November, beginning of December, long before Chicago came out.
Andrew had decided to finance it himself and Warners to distribute it.

This was not Indian dance by any means, but this was Andrew Lloyd Weber on Broadway, and the audience went wild.
The below-stage orchestra, conducted by James L. Abbott, was at times overpowering, but, then again, Andrew Lloyd Weber is known for maximum sound, and Broadway Theatre, newly refurbished, is enormous and cavernous, requiring extraordinarily expansive acoustics.

RollingStone.com: KISS : Paul Stanley Takes on the Phantom : News
A newly-shorn Paul Stanley donned a different mask than the greasepaint one he has become re-accustomed to in recent months when he paraded onto the Pantages Theater stage in Toronto last night (May 25) for the first performance of The Phantom of the Opera.
Before a motley crew of theatergoers, tourists and long-haired rock fans, the face which earned a mother's fear and loathing in Kiss took on the title role in Andrew Lloyd Weber's operetta about a disfigured masked man who terrorizes the Paris Opera House.
Stanley proved very much in his element amid the pyrotechnics and subterranean setting of the show, which is based on the novel by Gaston Leroux and full of macabre overtures and booming, dark orchestrations.

From the moment it was first made in 1916 as a German silent film, The Phantom of the Opera has captured the imagination of Hollywood.
Now comes Andrew Lloyd Weber’s ambitious adaptation of his international musical smash, which opened in the United Kingdom last weekend.
In many ways, Phantom is the prototypical Hollywood story: a young ingénue named Christine finds herself catapulted into the limelight after some string-pulling by an unseen (male) authority, who’s happy to see her succeed at the expense of her eternal soul, or at least some heavy-duty contract wrangling.

 NBC 6 News - Director's Chair - Review Archives
THE REVIEW: ONLY recommendable to “Phantom” junkies or fans of musical theater in general, Andrew Lloyd Weber’s long-running Broadway smash finally comes to the big screen in all of its overblown, excessive, cheeseball glory; courtesy flamboyant director Joel Schumacher (the man who put nipples on the Batsuit—he’ll never live it down).
The story is more intimate on film; but never as involving or as romantically sweeping as Schumacher and company seem to think it is. Given how faithful “Phantom” is to the stage version, this is evidence to flaws in the kitschy source material.
The acting is a bit uneven with Scotsman Gerard Butler a little shaky as The Phantom, an over-the-top Minnie Driver very funny as the spoiled diva Carlotta, and newcomer Emmy Rossum radiant and blessed with a lovely singing voice as Christine.

The Partial Observer - Dear Jon's Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
For nearly forty years, Andrew Lloyd Weber has dominated the Musical.
Often working with lyricist Tim Rice, Weber began with experiments in "rock opera," which might be more appropriately considered "rock cantatas." These hits included the Bible-based stories "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat" and "Jesus Christ, Super Star." The music in these is much better than the faithfulness to the Biblical tellings.
There are others that escape my memory at the moment; it is sufficient to say that among the musical composers of the last fifty years, including Steven Sondheim and others, Weber was for decades the shining star.
