Andrew McDermot (1790-1881) was a fur trader, merchant, philanthropist and the first independent storekeeper in the Red River Settlement (now Winnipeg).
McDermot, the eldest son of Miles MacDermot and Catherine (Kitty) O'Connor, was born in Belanagare, County Roscommon, Ireland.
McDermot was appointed in 1839 to the Council of Assiniboia, a colonial-style local government established by the HBC.

Andrew was educated at Stromness, in the Orkneys, but owing to his mother's straitened circumstances he entered the Company's service at the age of fourteen and set sail for Canada.
Andrew Bannatyne was appointed in 1872, as a member of the Council of the North West Territory, and in the Federal election of 1874 he opposed Donald A. Smith, Hudson's Bay Company's Commissioner, for the constituency of Selkirk but was narrowly defeated.
Andrew McDermot and he gave a plot of land as a site for a 20 bed hospital erected in 1882 but when a rush of settlers followed railway construction the small building was soon outgrown.

The Irish settler Andrew McDermot commented in 1848 that “All the mills in the Settlement cannot furnish half the wants of the people.” [52] The expansion of the colony’s milling capacity was also encouraged by the Hudson Bay Company.
Andrew McDermot, the colony’s most prominent miller, was also a leading free trader, a shopkeeper, a freighter and a dealer in cattle.
In the mid-1860s the Nor’Wester carried advertisements for Hay’s “American Steam Mill” and “new store” at the rapids of St. Andrew’s, grinding at the eighth bushel in wheat.

McDermot, as an important member of the community, was invited to attend the first meeting of the reorganized council on 12 Feb. 1835.
McDermot refused further offers of public office but was persuaded to become a justice of the peace for Manitoba in 1871.
McDermot was regarded as a remarkable man. He was reputed at his death on 12 Oct. 1881 to have been the wealthiest man in Manitoba and one of the most generous.

The HBC were often unable to provide enough goods for the growing settlement and McDermot was able to import his goods on HBC ships through York Factory.
The HBC, in order to curb the growing amount of free trade or illegal trade, denied McDermot a freighting contract with the HBC and by 1845, his goods from England were not being allowed passage on HBC ships.
He did rejoin the Council after an agreement was reached and partial reimbursement for his losses was paid.

Andrew Graham Ballenden Bannatyne, (baptized Andrew Grahme Balenden) Born October 31st, 1829, on South Ronaldsay, Orkney Islands, son of James Bannatyne and Eliza Balenden; entered the service of the Hudson's Bay Company in 1846, and worked at Norway House for many years.
Andrew G. Bannatyne was three years of age when his father, James Bannatyne, a British government fishery officer stationed at Stromness, Scotland, died.
Ten years later he and Andrew McDermot gave to the city the permanent site of the hospital, and for 12 years Bannatyne served as president of the hospital’s board.

In 1821, the North West Company of Montréal and the Hudson's Bay Company merged, with a combined territory that was extended by a licence to the North-Western Territory, which reached to the Arctic Ocean on the north and the Pacific Ocean on the west.
Although the HBC maintained a monopoly on the fur trade during the early-mid 19th century there was competition from James Sinclair and Andrew McDermot (Dermott), independent traders in the Red River Colony.
One major event that lead to the demise of the HBC's monopoly in Rupert's Land was the Guillaume Sayer Trial in 1849.
