Andrew McNaughton (1887-1966) was Canada's most prominent soldier in the 20th century.
Instead, McNaughton became Minister of National Defence when Ralston was forced to resign after the Conscription Crisis of 1944, as King did all he could to avoid introducing conscription.
McNaughton was soon pressured into calling for conscription despite King's wishes, a popular move for some Canadians but an equally unpopular one for many others.

Born in Moosomin, Saskatchewan (at the time in the Northwest Territories), McNaughton was a student at Bishop's College School in Lennoxville, Quebec before studying engineering at McGill University in Montreal.
Instead, McNaughton became Minister of National Defence when Ralston was forced to resign after the Conscription Crisis of 1944, as King did all he could to avoid introducing conscription.
His grandson Lieutenant-General Andrew Leslie is Chief of the Land Staff of the Canadian Forces.

McNaughton, Andrew George Latta, army officer, scientist, diplomat (b at Moosomin, NWT [Sask] 25 Feb 1887; d at Montebello, Qué 11 July 1966).
McNaughton returned to soldiering in WWII as commander of the 1st Canadian Infantry Division in 1939.
McNaughton remained a favourite of PM Mackenzie KING (he had earlier been a confidant of PM R.B.), and was slated to become the first Canadian-born governor general.

After the war, McNaughton joined the permanent forces and was Chief of the General Staff (CGS) until his appointment as President of the NRC in 1935.

Members of the Australian and East Timorese communities and are in shock today after hearing of the sudden death of well-known human rights activist and Convenor of the Australia-East Timor Association, Doctor Andrew McNaughtan, aged 50 years.
He gave the best advice exposing the TNI "militia" build up in the 1998-99 period, and was a key player in mobilising domestic and international support for INTERFET in the wake of the human cataclysm that followed the August 30th 1999 UN-supervised Referendum in East Timor.
He will be remembered for his hands on work with refugees and asylum seekers in Australia, his assistance to the West Papuan and Acehenese freedom struggles, and his work with Aborigines whilst working as a medical practitioner in Darwin and elsewhere in the early 1990s.
