The start of humanities computing is generally placed around 1949 when Roberto Busa realised that he required the assistance of a computer to analyse the vocabulary of St Thomas Aquinas.
The first study of computers in New Testament studies was probably the thesis successfully defended by John William Ellison in 1957 entitled, "The use of electronic computers in the study of the Greek New Testament text".
Unlike in the days of Andrew Morton we do not require capital funding of 10 million dollars for the appropriate computer equipment and we rarely require the services of a computer scientist or programmer (though a little IT support can be useful).

Also, personal computers that come with Linux distributions already installed are readily available from numerous vendors, including large mainstream vendors like Hewlett-Packard and Dell.
Still another mode of installation of Linux is to install on a powerful computer to use as a server and to use ordinary less powerful machines (perhaps without hard drives, and having less memory and slower CPUs) as clients over the network.

Torvalds has been locking down the 2.6.0 test versions for months, and Andrew Morton, the programmer in charge of 2.6.0, has said he expected the software to be released in December.
At the top of Morton's list of changes coming with 2.6.0 is the ability to run on multiprocessor servers--the machines that run around the clock, handling tasks such as bank account management, stock trades, supermarket sales transactions and e-mail delivery.
Specifically, the two say computers that use the 2.6 kernel won't be as susceptible to "thrashing," which forces consumers to wait as the computer labors under heavy hard-disk traffic loads.

Some common computing formats are not formally ratified as standards, yet have achieved de facto standard status because of their popularity, and software vendors that control these popular formats say standardization would inhibit their ability to keep pace with changing technology.
Computer security analyst and author Michael Erbschloe argues that Orion and similar approaches will not eliminate the need to test software in real-life scenarios, and explains that this task must be carried out by rotating pools of test users of varying competence.
