Andrew Plotkin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Andrew Plotkin, also known as Zarf, is an important figure in the modern interactive fiction community.
He was one of the earliest writers to use Graham Nelson's Inform development system, and one of the first since Infocom's heyday to explore the boundaries of interactive fiction as an artistic medium.
Plotkin appears as a character in Being Andrew Plotkin, an interactive fiction game by J.

 Change in the Weather review
Plotkin uses sound as well as visual details to build the tension: a bush gives way with a "small snap," the tree falls with a "splintering crash" after the "Crack!" of thunder--and the dizzy rush of detail among all the concurrent events produces a whirling, desperate confusion.
Though we get little of the protagonist's thoughts, it seems plausible to support that he or she is somewhat less than calm, and the author does his utmost to transfer the growing sense of panic to the player.
For the most part, Plotkin is content to show the details rather than telling the player how to feel, and the few exceptions--digging a trench, you "claw desperately" at the earth--are well placed.

Andrew's response was disappointment that I had made up a transcript, because he felt that the specific examples I gave weren't really valid.
Plotkin strikes the right balance here: the anonymous narrator will often point out puzzles as you wander through the game world, but it doesn't spoil them by giving you clues you haven't asked for.

 IF-Theory: Territory
This example appears in "Being Andrew Plotkin" (Wheeler, 2000), and is an agglomeration of shorter descriptions written by Andrew Plotkin himself, taken from various pages of Plotkin's personal website (which uses cave exploration as an elaborate metaphor for site navigation).
In the earlier example from "Being Andrew Plotkin," the player is told what it sounds like to be standing there, which adds a little bit of atmosphere, but it is not deployed with enough aim to have much effect.
In "Being Andrew Plotkin," which featured multiple player characters, a particular room description repeatedly changed to reflect the point of view of each PC the player inhabited during the course of the game.

Shade is an interactive fiction story written by Andrew Plotkin.
Its self-reflexivity can be seen in the way that the interactive fiction genre requires the participation of the reader in order to read the story, in order for the story to unfold into existence.
In this way, the story enforces its strength as a text and keeps the reader aware that he or she is participating in the act of reading a work of fiction that has been created by another mind.

In virtually all cases, the end story that results is one where the world presented is as unfair, depressing and bleak as the real one with a subtle difference.
Plotkin manages to distill the disappointments of reality and subtly twist them: as if all your personal problems still existed and in addition you lived in a world without the color red or ever feeling warmth, only vaguely aware that something was missing.
